Pea and ham soup

Ok now I know people say when making soup just to throw things together & that works wonderfully for me in every single other aspect of cooking but for soup it all goes horribly pear shaped. So does anyone have a delicious pea & ham soup recipe for me. I've been fancying it for weeks lol probably months infact but still haven't managed it. The simpler the better. Oh & I do have a slow cooker.
Thanks
Hugs

Hi helen,
There's an older thread with some pea and ham soup recipes that should help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the replies together.

I never have, day long (well, close
) slow cook on the hob or in my slow cooker too.
Mmmmm........think I may have to add this idea to next weeks menu now!0 -
what I do, (and my mum does) is cover it in in boiling water and boil for 5 minutes then discard that water and cover it again with fresh boiling water and boil for about 15 minutes per 1/2 lb plus 15 minutes (someone just confirm those timings for me as I go by the label on the pack of gammon/ham and can't remember exactly but I think that's right!?) , then take your ham out and put it aside.
Keep the water and add to it some onions, carrots and split peas or lentils and boil away until the lentils are cooked. Let it cool for a bit, blitz it with a blender and add a few bits of chopped ham/gammon back in.
We have the soup as a starter, then some slices of ham (sometimes with a bit of white sauce) with new potatoes and whatever veg you like as a main course. Keep the rest of the ham for sandwiches, frittatas, panninis, omlettes-whatever!0 -

Depends on how salty your ham is and how salty you like your soupDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

LOL good question... Normally I can smell it when I unwrap the ham. If in doubt then wash well or soak in water overnight. You can always add salt to the final product, much more difficult to remove it from the soup if the ham was too saltyDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
