Well after all that, only my mother in law tried it. Everyone else opted for the stuffed mushrooms that she made. She liked it anyway and said it was really nice.

I bought a ham hock from the butchers earlier to make pea and ham soup with. However having got it home its got a big bone in it and doesn't look much like the gammon joint I got from Lidl last time I made this soup. It was half the price though. Ham hocks have bones in them. The best soup is made with bones, you get the added benefit of calcium in your soup, not to mention more flavour0

As thriftlady says it'll taste even better than an ordinary gammon because of the bone.
I'll add this thread into your other pea and ham soup thread to keep all the suggestions together.

Super (no pun intended), I'm all for better soup. One last question then. When I asked for it, he asked if I wanted bacon or gammon. I asked for gammon only because thats what I bought at Lidl last time. What is the difference?SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Hi, I'm making some Pea & Ham soup tomorrow and wanted to know if I needed to soak the gammon joint as it says it's formed from selected cuts of pork. Do I still need to soak the joint to remove the salt? Thanks0

Hi npk,
I would soak it or at least cover it in cold water and bring to the boil and discard the water before cooking it, especially if you are planning to use the stock. It's so disappointing when a gammon turns out to be very salty.
