Chunky pea and ham soup
2 Gammon shanks
300g green split peas soaked overnight
2 large onions
1 bay leaf
Put all the ingredients into a large saucepan with 2 litres of water, bring to boil. Then reduce to a slow simmer for 2 hours, topping water as you go. There should be about 1.5 litres of thick soup at the end. Take out the gammon, remove the skin and bone and pull into chunks. Scoop out the onion and whizz to a paste in the food processor with a little of the soup. Stir back into the soup along with the ham. Serve with coarse black pepper
Nice os recipe, i thought i would share with you, any leftover ham is lovely in sandwiches, and is ideal in the SC, no added fat so nice and healthy.

I love this too...
But I always soak the ham shank / pestle in water overnight first otherwise I find that it can make the dish too salty.
mmmmmm mouth is watering already!

I generally don't bother with recipes.. but I am sure to make a soupd if I am lucky enough to find a ham knuckle in the ham ends. Makes a beautiful stock and there is generally plenty of meat as well
(Just add a few split peas while the stock cooks and lots of garden peas at the end.)I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
I bought a bacan hock yesterday and cooked it overnight in my slow cooker. £1.90 from morrisons frsh meat counter, I thought that was not a bad price.
I thought I might have a go at pea and ham soup.
Any fool proof recipes or do's and don'ts.
Or anything else you thing I should use the cooked meat for. Its so soft a lovely.0 -
Don't add any salt to soup until you have tasted it!!
Sometimes bacon hock is very salty, I have taken to soaking and changing water
twice.
Do use lentils instead of peas...cooks quicker!
