  • I make this aaalllll the time but as with all my recipes, there is no recipe as such. :o

Boil up a ham hough or gammon joint. Fry some onion and roughly chopped carrots. Then I add stock (boiled ham water) and the meat joint and bung it in the slow cooker with lots of dried peas. When the peas are tender remove the meat and chop roughlt. Return half to pot and whizz then add remaining meat.

If like me you usually forget to soak the peas overnight you can substitute with lentils or yellow spilt peas. ;)

    Hi sparklewing,

There's an older thread with more pea and ham soup recipes that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

just bumping this because we had a gorgeous P&H soup at the work's xmas do on the weekend, and i am dying to have it again.

i have some gammon steaks to use up. could i boil this, rather than gril, to get some stock for the soup, or would i be better off making plain old veggie stock?

By all means - I always use either gammon or regular pork for pea soup stock. Boiled together with the split peas, it gives and excellent flavour.

  • Can marrowfat peas be used for pea and ham soup? We have ordered a ham for boxing day and will have loads of marrowfats left over too, so was planning to make this.

    Thanks...

I remember as a child my grandma used to soak dried peas overnight with one of those round white tablets you used to get with them and then cook bacon ribs in it for hours, it was beautiful.

I was wondering what a ham shank (gammon hock to some) would be like cooked in peas in the slow cooker. Does anyone have a recipe how to cook this please?

I know I would have to soak the peas overnight but how do I cook them in the slow cooker as I don't want to be cooking it on the hob for hours.

    Ta.

Well you know you have to give us all the recipe now Dave don't you.

I have a gammon shank defrosting and a packet of dried peas sitting in the cupboard, any ideas would be most appreiated.
