Make sure that you don't add any more salt at all till the meal is finished and ready for serving. The water is usually salty enough.
No chance of that, I hardly put salt into or onto anything.
Thanks for our help Ollie, off to Morrisons today to get a couple of more shanks before everyone else buys them now they have read your advice.0 -

Once the liquid has been in the fridge you should be able to skim off the layer of fat on top."This site is addictive!"

I make this quite regularly, as we love it in our house served with crusty bread, or baguettes.
I get a ham shank from the butchers (£1) for a massive one. I always ask him to remove the fatty skin as I don't like it in my soup as if it breaks off and floats around my soup and I don't like it but that is just my preferance.
Overnight I will have soaked a bag of yellow split peas, and add these, the shank, and a chopped onion or two and put them in the slow cooker and cover with water. That's it - that's all i do. It is so simple and its delish. Everyone who has tried it has made it themselves cos it is so good0 -
HI,
It’s probably too late but here is how I make my soup.
First of all soak the peas overnight, you can also soak the ham in a separate pot if you want to remove some of the salt.
In the morning I gently fry some chopped onion, celery and garlic. Until it softens. I love leeks and will often add sliced leeks if I have them.
I drain the peas, and put them into the bottom of the slow cooker,
Then I add the softened veg and finally the ham.
Then cover it all with water.
I cook it all day on low. After about 6 hours, I check them ham. If it falls apart easily ( I normally shred it with tow forks it’s that soft) I take it out and shred it.
I then sit the meat aside as the soup os still cooking. I do this as I feel that pork can dry out if overcooked.
Once the soup is ready, I then normally add some cornflour and then mash up about half of it with a stick blender. I do this whilst it is still in slow cooker.
Then I add in the cooked ham and that’s it!0 -
Thanks folks for all of your ideas, they all sound great, can't wait to try them.
I was going to make some tonight as I cooked the gammon overnight and steeped the peas too.
However, we ended up having our lunch out so we are totally stuffed tonight.
I had divided the stock into three plastic take away tubs so I think I will divide the gammon between the three. Will freeze a couple and make the peas tonight in the slow cooker.
I bought another shank from Morrisons today but it looks quite a bit smaller than the last one so I think I wil only get two meals out of this one. Still, it was only £1.49 so still a bargain for two meals for two of us.0 -
I was lucky enough to get a huge bag of fresh garden peas for 69p from Sainsburys which I sat and shelled last night I have bunged them into the freezer. It brought back lots of memories of being a little girl and doing it for my Mum circa 1947.I seem to remember that she made some sort of soup from the pods as well with bits of bacon in it .Times were hard in those days and nothing got wasted .
I am trying to decide if I should make some Pea and Ham soup with my frozen peas, anyone got a good recipe available0
