Debate House Prices

In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non MoneySaving matters are no longer permitted. This includes wider debates about general house prices, the economy and politics. As a result, we have taken the decision to keep this board permanently closed, but it remains viewable for users who may find some useful information in it. Thank you for your understanding.

I think pulling this board away from Pure Money would be a mistake, not because it isn't discussion (because it is) but because the information on it is so relevant to the other boards in Pure Money, and because it covers a range of extremely important topics that should be in the forefront of Money Saving thought and practice rather than being relegated to the position of inconsequential chat.

    Yes, important topics like:

"Just Luvving it" - An uplifting tale of someone enjoying the recession and wanting to rub people's noses in it. People who may be hurting due to the recession and have come to MSE for help & Advice.

"BTL Muppet trying to sell his lemon for 13k" - A thinly disguised dig at the BTL landlords.

"My BTL empire is in tatters" - A thread created for argumentative purposes.

"I sold my house - DD is Queer" - Need I say more? (deleted by BG's)

"Sock Puppets and reconcilliation" - Threda about sockpuppets

"How much has this crash saved you" - Another dig at people who are losing homes and wealth during the recession.

I could go on. I could also go into all of the more "Worthy" threads and note all of the arguing and vitriol. No matter what thread you create, it will descend into chaos within a couple of pages.

What is the point of this board?
  • With the benifit of hindsight I bet Martin would have closed this thread (to new posts) after his first post and just left a poll running

Fair enough, I would suggest people post views supported by a link to facts or stats or an opinion given elsewhere.

Its very easy to sound extremist while discussing printing money and future negatives or even future positives as the ftse/bank shares, etc drops 10% for whatever reason

What an excellent display of the mature attitude we have come to expect from this area of mse.

Well if the cap fits. Lets face it DT is the forum version of Heat magazine.

For the time being I've changed the name of the board slightly, to give more indication of what people will find.

However the team and I are going to monitor the board. If people continue to be abusive to each other then we're going to have to start PPRing more liberally - not somethign I like doing.

So please can those who get agressive, just calm down the tone, debate is fine but scathing anger simply doesn't fit what these forums are for.
Is it possible to put a warning up before folks can enter this area.

Something like "You must be over 21, and crave abuse to enter this part of the site"

I think those are valid and fair actions. Is PPR ban? I think some bannings would help. :(

I'm sad you have responded in posts in this thread only to the negative side of the group here...commenting only on the undeniably unpleasant element. I'd really have apprecited feedback for the rest of us, because we are not all unpleasant. I feel eveytime this whole nasty side is raised the 'nice' people are lumped in with the whole and the valuable stuff discussed dismissed as readily as the -well, the other stuff. :(

I really hope misskool posts more, and the people who have commented here and on my b'day thread who say they read but don't post.

For those who say we are only nasty, there are some really supportive people here, I have been the beneficiary of that, and I feel not to acknowledge that would be rude to the 'valuable' contributers to this board.

    PPR = posting privileges removed

Not sure if there is any ban from reading the forum since every forum is a public one afaik

I will make a serious suggestion, not just for this board but the rest of MSE, log IP addresses and put a stop to multi-log ins, it can't be that hard to do.

The problem is unfortunately the knowledgeable contributors are often lost amongst the unpleasant element. Those of who read but don't comment are those that take on bored the advice and information we read but don't want to get embroiled in a petty argument. Sadly this thread is descending into now.

I have found since this board was created a lot of what was normally discussed in DT moved over to here. I feel we have lost some contributors to discussions threads as these board have become a closed shop and have made people feel unwelcome.
I believe it would benefit us all to open these discussion up the the wider audience of mse.

I came to this board not so long ago following a pm off another poster suggesting I would find it interesting, and although I don't post here much, I do pop in quite often. I too think it would be beneficial to open it up to a wider audience.

It's definitely an interesting board, that's for sure icon7.gif
