Debate House Prices

In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non MoneySaving matters are no longer permitted. This includes wider debates about general house prices, the economy and politics. As a result, we have taken the decision to keep this board permanently closed, but it remains viewable for users who may find some useful information in it. Thank you for your understanding.

You were most certainly NOT the person who said I was scum.

    Thank you.

I might be a little bit gobby, but I would never do that :o

omg for the 100th time its not being merged into the arms or discussion time is it? it will be seperate board where you can still "discuss financial matters". why would you stop posting just because its moved!!!! it will be the same board. it will only change if people are being narrow minded and refuse to move with the board just to be stubborn.

Like penguine, I came to the house buying board when I was looking to buy a house, and got absolutely invaluable information. This was in Feb 2007, when there was only 1 board, and so discussion of prices wasn't separated at all - which I think is more sensible, as people don't make decisions on buying a house without considering its price!

Had the information on prices been on a separate board, listed far away from the rest of the housing/mortgages info, I would simply never have found it - because I wouldn't have known to look for it.

One of the disdavantages of the huge growth in the site over the last year or 2 - and don't get me wrong, generally, I think that's been great - has been that the number of boards has grown a lot. There are a lot of 'words' on the front page - it's very text heavy - and quite hard for a newbie to negotiate. If house prices ends up being in a completely different part of the front page to house buying, selling and renting, it will be doing a disservice to all those thousands of people (millions?) who come here in search of advice.

To insult all potential posters as 'narrow minded ' and 'stubborn' is unhelpful, to say the least. The reality is, even if the regulars know where to look, the newbies won't - and surely the purpose of the site is to help them, not just provide a talking shop for a few regulars to let off steam.

Martin, lol, just move it. The people will follow!

It was easier when the site only had one place for discussions.
Now we have two groups who don't want to live next door to one another for fear of contamination.

We are a site made up of many types of people with varying opinions and its nice when we can all debate various issues that effect our lives. What I do hate is the feeling of intimidation if someone asks a question or needs a point clarifying and they are looked down upon or ignored.

This move I feel will break down the barrier that I feel is there and make the information and varied views more accessible to everyone.

well your para-phrasing is wrong isnt it. and by the way i am not a moderator but a board guide this site does not have moderators the rules about this can be read here . You will also see the note about this sites not haveing moderators on the top of every page which states
    IMPORTANT! This forum isn't moderated.
If you spot a spam, illegal, offensive, racist, libellous post or PM please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com

but at the end of the day martin owns this site, it is his to do what he likes with it. no-one pays to use this site and to be honest i think its fair that martin consults people on these issues, he doesnt have to does he?

You'd be called a moderator on other websites. Your argument is just semantics. Anyway, I've yet to see a poorer post from a board guide too.

As you say (and I previously said), Martin owns the website and he can do whatever he likes with it.

I don't think my paraphrasing is wrong, you haven't mounted any sort of counter-argument and your continued arrogance makes me think that my implied accusation (you think you're better than the rest of us because you're a 'board guide') is wholly correct.

i visit every day, i just dont post. But i still board guide this board daily.

What does "board guide" (verb) entail? Moderating threads? Deleting multiple user accounts? Being a knowledgeable sort that can answer (on-topic) questions?

    Genuine question.

but this board is not just about house prices is it?

everyone kicked off when threads were moved as they were not to do with house prices so this board was set up so people could have discussions about the wider economy.

I for one would love for this just to be a strictly house prices board it would make life much easier.

we can move and delete posts and threads and nothing else.

we cannot delete user account, we cannot ppr people, that is all dealt with by abuse. we have to use the same system as everyone else for abuse issues.

if you want to answer questions you can, but not in any official compacity of mse. if you see all board guides signatures this will all be explained.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I think its very sad we have behaved so badly as a group to have invited such hatred from other users. :(

I also feel that while I accept that this board is not PURELY of the same nature as the others in the pure money boards section we, Martin, and the country should be encourging all Money Savers to get a better financial persepective. It is on that basis I would find a move to the more general OT discussion areas to be ill judged, and a negaative move.

Most stuff in here is NOT OT to any pure money subjects, but I accept of a different nature.

Another point on robust is that the ONLY time I can recall venturing in the Savings board there was very horrid, heated discussion, accusations of trolling and even worse manners than ours :(

Personally, I would call the board something that makes it clear its more of a discussion than advice board and put it at the bottom of the pure money board. Even putting the bar in a paler colour to let it fade against the ''advise boards''. People should be being encouraged to consider the wider effects of the economy and interalted politcal and personal decisions...not out them in the back burner. We need to be more informed and impowered, not less, and encouraged to act upon informtion not just prop bars up with moaning and not carrying our beliefs and understanding through to the financial decisions we make in our life and when voting.

ETA: In fact, I feel really strongly that to put this board as a sub board to a discussion area would be sending a very orr message on financial education, contrary to anything I've seen Mr Lewis advocate. I remember very strongly , for example, hearing him say on the radio, the answer is not to rip up our credit cards, but to engage with their use wisely: I feel the same here. The answer is not to shove this board onto a back burner, but to make it used ''wisely''.

My guess it's what lawyers recommend that you call moderators to dodge legal problems (not unreasonably).
