Debate House Prices
In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non MoneySaving matters are no longer permitted. This includes wider debates about general house prices, the economy and politics. As a result, we have taken the decision to keep this board permanently closed, but it remains viewable for users who may find some useful information in it. Thank you for your understanding.

The house we almost bought last year sold 8 weeks after we pulled out of the purchase. It went for £40k less than we were going to pay for it. So I doubt we're ever going to feel it was a mistake not to buy it.
Im not disputing that - but if this board wasnt where it is you wouldnt necessarily have got any different advice0 -
I guess the board will go where Martin wants it and I think there is a desire to keep the top part of the forum free for all those who just want help and who don't want alternatives put to them that indicates they may be at fault. A bit like over-protective parents who bring their kids up to believe all in the world is warm and cosy.
So when people come on and say I've got a 125% mortgage and borrowed 8x income answers should be of the sort:
Oh that's terrible aren't those banks rotten for doing that to you. Why don't you see if you can get out of paying for them.
and not
You stupid fool why did you do that have you never heard of personal responsibility.0 -
i cant believe people on here have such tunnel vision, am i in the minority that i search most boards on here? all my friends who come on here search most boards as well.
if you are being so narrow minded and not searching other boards people should, you will learn a whole lot more about things.
This is the poorest post from a moderator I've read on any website.
To paraphrase:
Martin is thinking about doing something you don't like. The reason you don't like it is because you're "narrow minded" and don't use the boards in the prescribed manner. We are right, you are wrong: you are just posters, we are part of the board elite.0 -
I respect your opinion but this is not the time or the place to be discussing my shortcomings.
We are supposed to be discussing the moving of this board, so on that note, I will bow out of this discussion.
We can continue to discuss via private message if you wish, by this I mean discuss, I am not one to throw abusive messages via that medium (or any other).
I did not mean to make it look like you had shortcomings, but was just pointing out that you may be being a little sensitive.
Could you also just please post again to say that it was not me that called you 'scum' by PM, because that post makes it look like it was!0 -

I expect this post to be pulled pretty fast too.0 -
Martin, lol, just move it. The people will follow!0

i, like penguine, found this board useful when i was trying to make a decision on whether or not to buy a house last year. the house buying board was useful for procedural information, but it was not useful in putting that potential purchase in its economic context.
if you move the board to the "chat" areas of the site, you are effectively dumbing down the site in my view. i would leave this forum where it is, and if there is a problem with individual posters, deal with them as you would/should elsewhere.
that said, it would be nice if you dumped the board into "the arms", as then i'd stop using it and could get more work done, and everyone who is left could concentrate on the most important function of the chat bits of the site - cross-thanking each others' posts.0 -

I didn't get any advice from the board about our decision to pull out of our house purchase (I didn't even post about it). But if I hadn't been reading this board, I wouldn't have realised house prices were falling so fast and I wouldn't have realised the economy was in big trouble. I wouldn't have started thinking about the wider issues.0 -
i dont like the arms discussion area so i stay away. probably it would be easier if the people who dont like this board did the same as well dont you think rather than moan that this board should be closed down. why do you waste your time (and others) by coming and posting on a board that you say is useless. dont you have better things to do than read and post on a board you detest!
yes even i dont like the name calling and pointless arguments, but i still find a lot of useful stuff on here. people post with their own prejudices and life experiences. the readers of the forum are surely intelligent enough to sift the wheat from the chaff and make their own conclusions or move elsewhere when they get bored or dont find the forum useful. atleast that is what i would do.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -

Me too, I'm not even a regular poster and I spend far too much time on here.0
