Many people with Bipolar swear by Lithium. Although I have Bipolar my psychiatrist preferred to treat me with newer drugs with less toxicity and need for regular blood testing.

Well I don't think it was a first choice for treatment, but the problems with my current medication seems to be outweighing the good recently, so we are considering something else.

I have fairly regular blood tests anyway so that's not too much of a worry for me. I'm hoping that I find it works for me, anything to make things a little less hellish right now would be good.

Thanks ruby for your reply :)

Have you read An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison? She is a psychiatrist who has Bipolar and is a real champion of Lithium. Hope you find some respite.:)

It is a good book isn't it Louise although I did find her championing of Lithium mildly irritating!:rotfl:How are you doing today? x

  • Sorry to hear things are difficult for you at the moment Louise, Sequeena, Miroslav and sal-ad daze (great name didn't get it at first!). Do you not alternate between the families at Christmas? It's a tricky time sometimes isn't it! One of my cats seems to want to write to you all! She keeps jumping on the keyboard! Love to you all xxx

Thanks for the reply Ruby, there's only us in our family and his family is quite big. Previously we've all met up at dd's place for Christmas day (tbh it can be a bit overwhelming) but at elast we've been together. It's going to be difficult this year if they don't get back for Christmas as we'll be just us for the first time in a few years. I think I was just feeling a bit down, the missing is stronger after a skype conversation, we have a baby grandchild now so that's guaranteed to brighten Christmas!
  • How can I explain to mental health services that I feel they are treating me like a joke?

For a while now I've not felt my GP or mental health team take my problems seriously. They just don't seem to understand where I'm coming from & it's very upsetting. How do they expect someone to tell them how it is in less than an hour consultation?

Devil, is there a chance you could speak. To a different gp? I know it took a long while and a change of doctor before I was actually getting anywhere, following a mis-diagnosis.

Thank you for the book recommendation, ruby. I shall put in a library request for it :)
