  • Well I'm still on March for two more days (I run per calender month) but I couldn't resist a lovely new thread.

Mrs M will you put me down for £250 for April please. This should be the easiest month of all, as we are away at Disneyland, Paris for a week and food has been factored into the holiday cost. However, we will have DGS for the Easter holiday which will add a bit. Also DD2's birthday is in April, though we will be away for that (for the second year running as I keep being reminded :o )

Hi folks! As you will see from my sig I have spent more than half my April budget already stocking up for the month - but I am not too bothered as I will have three more big shops to do this month giving me about £40 per shop which will mainly be for F&V and milk. I have stocked up on dried goods, household stuff and meat and fish so I am not expecting any unpleasant surprises! Hope I haven't spoken too soon!

Have just come back from lunch at MIL's - we were doing a sponsored walk this morning and she kindly offered to cook for us! We walked 4 miles - not a lot I know, but DH is so unfit - he found it hard to keep up with me! And we are off in a moment to go swimming - I am determined to get some weight off him. It's hard when his mum makes stuff like treacle tart for pudding! Still, it was lovely not to have to do the cooking for a change!

Good luck everyone for April. I will try to keep up this month!

    Love Moniker

Went to get some juice and milk from the shop and as ever was amazed by the cost of Somerfield, but its walking distance away. Will be having bolognese tonight and making a pie for tomorrow night as I bought some puff pastry in my big shop. I have tried making pastry so many times, but my hands are too warm, it just gets all soft and squelchy and as we don't have it that often, I'm willing to pay quid odd it costs.

Ooh I seem to be first!!!:j

My April started 25th March and I've spent £110 already! But that includes a 'monthly' shop of all non fresh stuff - tins, baking stuff, cereal, etc. etc. And have been to the greengrocers, farm, shop and butchers too, so quite pleased. I managed to find 25k of spuds for £4.50, which I well pleased about until I saw them being sold on the roadside nearby for £3!!!! Still it's better than the £7 I paid for my last lot. It should last a couple of months.

    Good luck to everyone.

I can never keep spuds for more than a week/10 days max - they always end up sprouting and going really rubbery - what's the best way to store them?

    Hi Chewits

I used to have the same problem. In the end I got one of those potato sacks from Lakeland. Think it cost £2.99. They are cotton and lined with a black material inside with a drawstring at the top for loading the bag up and a zip at the bottom so you unload as you go. I then put the bag in the darkest part of a cupboard. You could always try a jute bag which works on the same principle I believe. Good luck. HTH.
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.

    Hi Mrs McM

Can you put me down for £280 for April please. Will post March figure on March thread as soon as the end of the month comes and I know where I am up to. Other half is away for a week but I may use the time and expense to stock up. Thanks for tips and hints everyone. Here is to another successful month.

I have a bag like that, except the flap closes with velcro -- came from one of those 'door to door' brochures full of cleaning and houshold items.

Whilst I keep mine in the kitchen, I find it varies from one bag/type of spuds to the next as to just how good it is. I've had some (I think came from Mr T) that lasted 3 weeks beyond the date on the bag, whilst the ones from S'flds normally start to sprout within 48 hours of the date!!

Works much better than that with carrots, brocolli, cauli and cabbage though

(I do normally remember to tip them out of the plastic bag directly into my special one, but if I forget I'm lucky if they make it to the bag date!!).

Another NSD here. But I will still need to get some more milk tomorrow.

With my potatoes, I put them in a wicker basket at the bottom of the larder, which is cool & dark. But, as always, there is more information here:
