It depends what you want from the journey. First class you tend to get more legroom, free tea/coffee, nicer carriages etc.
If your journey was originally £10 and the fee was £10, then personally I wouldn't. I have been tempted before when I was paying £40 odd for the journey to upgrade when the upgrde fee was a tenner, but haven't ever bothered. I'd consider it though, depending on the length of the journey.

what company is it with?
GNER 1st class is great....
One bonus I noticed for 1st class is that you don't get little kids, families and drunken yobs shouting/screaming/weeing/spilling etc.... nice and quiet, free tea and coffee, free newspapers and more room.... well worth £10 I reckon..
no offence to any families, or ppl with kids, but I'm sure you see where I'm coming from!!0 -
It also depends on the train that you are travelling on, if you are going on a weekday and the route you are taking.
We went from Liverpool to London on a Friday ~ it was definitely worth it. Lovely food, constant coffee/tea refills or soft drinks. Plenty of room, complimentary newspaper...
We came back on a Saturday ~ no table service, you could go and pick up a complimentary sandwich and drink from the buffet car but it was 3 carriages down. Still plenty of space but not quite as luxurious.
I have been from Liverpool to Bristol and had to change just as the food was being brought round. The second train only had a snack pack ~ rubber food and polystyrene coffee/tea, although they did have small cans of soft drinks for my daughter and I had a couple of bottles of water. The seat I had reserved, had someone sat in it ~ it would have meant being sat away from the group I was with so I didn't mind, but then at the next station someone got on and insisted I move because he had reserved the seat I was sat in  So in the end I sat for the rest of the journey at the other end of the carriage from my daughter and mother.
Didn't mean to be so long!! but anyway, its worth it sometimes, but not others, however, at least you do get a seat! Both routes were on Virgin trains.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

I went with Virgin from Leeds to London first class and it was worth it as it is a long journey.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

Leeds to London is well worth it..... GNER rocks, and you get use of the 1st class lounges....
It calms your whole day down!0 -
If you travel Monday toFriday on VIRGIN they offer VIRGIN Value 1st single tickets from £28 (£56 return). You need to book 14 days or more in advance and no refund if you decide to not to travel.
1st class on VIRGIN Pendalino services are very good value, evne if you have to pay a higher fare for one way, and a lower fare for the other. Average them out and look what the food you get for free would cost you at the on-board shop. Sometimes you can be travelling for under £10 one way 1st class, when you do the sums.0 -
I disagree. Parents (along with smokers and dog owners) should respect and understand that their choices in life can easily affect others. Personally, I would not take a child into a First class carriageAmba_Gambla wrote:if you pay for it, then go ahead0
