I disagree. Parents (along with smokers and dog owners) should respect and understand that their choices in life can easily affect others. Personally, I would not take a child into a First class carriage

I took my daughter first class from Liverpool to Bristol a few weeks ago. I don't see that there were any issues caused by my actions. She is not a baby ~ she is 14 and was sat quietly listening to her mp3 throughout the journey. We were sat opposite a woman with her daughter of about 4/5 yrs of age, she sat and coloured in for the time that we shared on the train. The rudest person on the train was a gentleman who refused to understand that there were issues with seating and the train had been overbooked with people who had reserved their seats having to sit elsewhere.

If you make the choice to pay extra for your journey, wherever you decide to go, you have a right to take your child/children with you. Just because it is first class doesn't mean there is an automatic right for adults not to have children in the same carriage.

No, if you pay, you can sit where you like. If you're going to pay for it, why shouldn't you?

If they were to make child free carriages and charged extra, they'd make a fortune.

I wouldn't expect small screaming kids in 1st class, and there is much less chance of them being there, but if they are, what can you do? You deal with it

i have been thinking about this since i posted and i think that if you pay for something then your entitled to use the servive yu pay for no matter what where or who your with, that does include train upgrades as well.
with first class it seems you are paying for more leg room, food, drinks, overall a more relaxed atmosphere, which if you have children traveloing on a train can be difficult therefore anything to make your journey easier, the better!
appreciate what you have got x

    Agree Scooper.

I have seen many families of 2 adults and 2 children enjoying a meal in 1st class. It is an opportunity for the family to sit down and enjoy quality time together, while someone else does the cooking and cleaning.

Look beyond the cost and to the other benefits/opportunities offerd by 1st class travel.

Sometimes we do things at the cheapest cost, when we can push the boat out and enjoy.

Live a lot not a little!!!

I'm all for moneysaving, but sometimes you've got to sit back and enjoy what you've got.....

You can't take it with you....
  • Of course the best person to decide whether a child(ren) is 'suitable' to travel in First Class is the parent and age is not always the best guide - a sleeping baby is better than a "bored" teenager. But please remember that those around you probably run the companies that pay our wages - I would hate for my boss to lose a big contract simply because he couldn't concentrate for the two hours before his big presentation.

As a childless, non-smoking moneysaver with no pets, I often find that those who've made different choices in life forget that other people deserve a bit of respect. If you've lived with kids for years you're probably able to block out much of the background noise but the rest of us aren't so lucky. Children are our future and need to learn to adapt to different environments so I'm not saying parents shouldn't book First class, only that part of the experience should be used to educate them in social ettiquet

i think that putting chlidren into the catogory of dogs and people who smoke is a little harsh!!
at the end of the day the rail company is offering a service, and a option of that service is to pay extra for a bit extra on your journey,so if you have children who are part of society as well!!then its the problem of the people who have the problem to deal with it.

Remember respect is a two way process.

Hear, hear. People who smoke aren't allowed to do so on trains anymore, so the fact they do smoke elsewhere shouldn't be to their detriment and most responsible owners make sure their dogs are properly trained, cleaned up after etc. Now children ....
