    Do you remember ...

    Learning to tie your shoelaces?

    First day at school?

All the times your dad held the bike as you learned to balance, and you couldn't ... and that glorious exciting wonderful time when you did?

In life, there are times when we don't know, but someone takes the time to show us, to teach us, to let us stand on our own two feet. Maybe, most of what any of us know, someone taught us.

But, no matter how much you know in life, and know about many many things, one life is never long enough to know everything ... we are all equally ignorant, no matter how knowledgeable.

Why not share what knowledge you may have, not with those who know, but with those who don't.

    Do you remember ...

Just how many times, someone once did that for you.
If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

I'm sorry, but do you need a degree in Nuclear Physics to use Google ?

No you don't but you do need to know how to use a PC and believe it or not not everyone does, for example my mum recently got a laptop and was forever ringing me to find out how to work it, search the internet, etc so yes some people just don't know and yes some people just need pointing in the right direction which is what this site is for isn't it information sharing, helping each other out, offering advice and tips that others may know little about?
Remember ....its not a bargain unless you need it :D

If you can register and post on a forum you can probably use Google though!

Personally I think it's because people now see places like this as a social site rather than informational, so think nothing of just posting as if they were having a chat or asking a casual question to someone stood next to them.

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well, the polished old case fastened to the wall and the shiny receiver on the side of the box. . .

Just a story ... but maybe it has a moral? One about how we can help others, and the effect we have, even unknowingly, when we do?

MF: thanks for reminding me of that particular short story -- I was intrigued the first time I heard it, because it seemed to have been penned by an author unknown and unsung.

There was some talk of it first appearing in the US edition of Reader's Digest in the 1950s, but no-one has ever been able to prove (or disprove) it. So the identity of the author remains a mystery.

As you say, just a story, but that title -- Other Worlds To Sing In -- is still, all these years later, one of the most resonant in contemporary fiction and its old-fashioned simplicity remains beguiling.

Thanks for the reminder, and the memory.

I believe this is correct ...

It was originally published, as you say, in the Readers Digest - June 1966, and the author was Paul Villard.

I am afraid the meaning of your post totally escapes me !

Just as a matter of interest, it may interest others to know that one of your very first posts on MSE started:-

"Many a happy hour must have been spent by the writer of the verbal diarrhoea below to feed his delusion of being A Very Powerful Person in charge of A Very Powerful Business."

......a most meaningful contribution to the aims of this site - and of course, VERY polite !

    moonrakerz:

As a matter of passing interest, has the cold wind presently sweeping the UK carried away whatever sense of humour you might once have possessed?

I just wondered in view of the way your earlier post referred to the level of "intelligence" which you expect others on MSE to display, seeing as how it's the exercise of same that is helpful in distinguishing between posts that are serious, and posts that are light-hearted.

Anyway, thanks for tracking through my posting history so as to regale others here with the fruits of your research.

Unfortunately though, the day when I or any other MSE member is required to be VERY (your capital letters) polite in responding to a deceitful post by a self-serving scammer -- oh dear, you somehow forgot to mention that, or the thread to which my quoted post relates -- is the day when courtesy is being taken just a little bit too far.

Still. Out of politeness, I now entirely withdraw my comment about you being a party-pooper.

You're clearly a very serious person who deserves to be treated as such and I can now see why you find so much of MSE so very, very tiresome.

MF: can't thank you enough -- seriously!

I've never heard of Paul Villard before so you've just unlocked a mystery that's nagged me for quite a while.

    Sincere thanks again!:T

I just wanted to say, i have also witnessed many unnecessarily patronising and rude posts recently across the forums. Unfortunately this will happen on every forum so i wouldn't get too wound up about it. (If it was directed at me, i'd probably wind myself up about it though! lol)

I'm a well established member on many other forums, and more of a lurker on this one, but i can never understand people like moonraker who get so irritated by people repeating what seems like simple/easy to google questions.

If someone asks something i can answer it makes me feel happy to have helped, and i try not to consider that they could have found the answer for themselves.

In most cases, simply googling for an answer is nowhere near as fun as interacting with a fantastic community such as this one. I've been researching how to grow potatoes and googling extensively, but nothing can beat that one to one, personalised touch when you get a response from a fellow forum member.

I agree that if we had 25 threads per day asking how much minimum wage is it would be ridiculous, but we don't.

Sometimes Googling can over-complicate a potentially simple answer.

My apologies for straying from the original point of the thread.
