  • Simple rule:

    * constructive advice from a fellow poster is advice from a real person;

    * destructive comment from a fellow poster is attention-seeking by an online ID.

    Stick with the former, and they'll stick with you.

    Ignore the latter, and they vanish back into cyberspace.

    No problem.

    The one thing that i have learnt on mse is that there is alot of people who "state" that they have never put a foot wrong in their life, they have never smoked, never drank, never done drugs, never smacked their children, never had a cross word with anyone, never got a caution or worse from the police. They have the perfect life with a mortgage or house paid for, the best children in the world who never put a foot wrong and their kids go to all the greatest out of school activities and are the fittest kids who never eat sweets, chocolate, crisps etc, they have a spouse with the best job who is perfect, they have no debt and have worked all their life and never claimed benefits. oh and they read the daily mail.

    They then shout every person down who states something that they don't agree with, if its to do with benefits their quote always starts with "i go to work and pay my taxes for you to sit on your backside, why should i pay for you", some people who disagree with what the question is about really do go over the top and alot of time their talking about situations that they no nothing about, but what they have read about in their newspapers.

    Hence one of the reasons why i tend to think about typing a response to something then decide against it, or when i read the title of a thread i already know what some of the responses are before going into a thread. And to answer the question i feel that it has got worse over the last few months, along with the spammers, they have been coming thick and fast lately.

    The ones I really dislike are the people who ask for advice, don't thank or criticise if it isn't the answer they wanted.

    Well, fair enough.

    But I don't read the Daily Mail.

    I blame all this bad attitude on the Daily Mail. Those on the left hate it, those on the right love it, and the majority in the middle couldn't care less as they are quite happy reading the Beano.:D

    I tend to think this is a woman problem. They tend to view any kind of disagreement or contrary viewpoint as aggressive or hostile.

    This especially true on sites which are largely woman only - any kind of contrary viewpoint is deemed somehow as hostile and you end up with lots of posts of people just agreeing with everyone else and anyone who breaks the consensus is deleted. That's why a lot of the viewpoints they put forward are rubbish because they are never tested and scrapped or refined.

    From disagreement and argument a truth emerges or fails. It is stronger for being tested by contrary arguments.

    I don't find posts rude or arrogant here. If someone posts something stupid you are doing them no favours by pretending they haven't. I find the threads where there is heated argument are often the most illuminating, even if some woman find the arguments scary.

    Perhaps assertiveness training or just some growing up is required by those who find argument and disagreement on a message board as rude and scary.

    'Growing Up' may fit into other forums, but this isn't like other forums. People do need to remember that new posters are frequently coming here when they are at the lowest ebb.

    My experience in some walks of life may mean some things are immediately obvious to me, but if the same thing didn't occur to someone else, it doesn't mean they're stupid. It just means they've not had that experience to learn from as yet.

    I loved the post earlier on
    Positive = thanks
    Negative = ignore.

    Funny thing is I was just thinking about this earlier on. I thought when I do post a problem (and the negativity here has put me off in the past), I'll put at the end "constructive criticism / help only please", and if anybody ignores that, I'll just quote their post along with a dictionary definition of the word "constructive". :D

    You're not doing yourself any favours by making statements like this! For a start, everyone has a username and often you cannot identify if someone contributing to a thread is male or female. To make a sweeping statement that this is a "woman problem" is rather patronising.

    I totally agree that something needs to be one about people on this site who bully and are nasty to others,ive noticed it particularly in posters who have high thread counts,and im not saying all are like this,but these posters seem to think that because they have so many thousands of thanks it gives them carte blanche to go treating others any way they like and i think if this is not stamped out here then decent posters will leave.

    I would take issue with that statement - in a very polite way, of course.

    Those having a large post count are those who have used this site the longest, and after a while you do tend to get get rather "hacked off" with those people who regularly post on here asking what time the last train from Bognor is on a Sunday night or such similar (to be blunt !) stupid questions.
    They appear to be intelligent enough to join MSE and type out a thread "start" but not intelligent enough to do a search of MSE or use Google.
    (Or even use AQA and boost my daughter's income !)
    If these are what you call "decent" posters, I'm afraid I wouldn't be sorry to see them leave :D

    Example: About 2 minutes ago I posted an answer to a query about passport validity - this question comes up on an almost daily basis - why do people keep asking the same questions ???? It has been answered dozens of times already and I got 306,000 hits on Google. It really took the person longer to type out the question than it would to find the answer !

    Well thanks a lot, moonrakerz.

    It's that kind of post that's going to kill off MSE completely.

    Anyone coming on here to mention any of the following self-help aids:

    * http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Google&meta=&rlz=

    * http://whois.domaintools.com/

    * http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/00b90f10e44ebc08fd11241c41770493/wcframe?name=accessCompanyInfo

    * http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/index.htm?cids=Google_PPC&cre=Government_Citizens_Rights

    * http://www.oft.gov.uk/

    * http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/

    is just spoiling it for everyone.

    (Be even worse, they actually recommended any MSE user to have the above installed, on-screen, in their IE Links Toolbar -- so don't do it!)

    Please go and post somewhere else, you're just a party-pooper.
