This weekend I was speaking with a friend who's the editor of a respected energy industry newspaper. Their analysis is that prices have now peaked and will start to reduce again in the coming months. They advised not to lock yourself into an inflexible capped tariff and ride this period out.

Great.... I capped last week with Powergen and was feeling I'd got something right at last..... should have known.......

I keep our heating set to very low.

It was so cold the other day - I had to get a candle out!

If it gets any colder - I'll have to light the darn thing!!!:D

Not in a gas oven I hope;) . My DH has moaned cos I've suggested he wears something warmer on a weekend instead of shorts with the gas fire on full.

I intend waiting a few weeks to see what announcements other energy companies announce before I change suppliers.

Makes you wonder when it will all stop and I think government should start to do something about it.What next will it be 50-75% as they seem to be able to do what they want with us

They need to look at the problems that Europe are creating for us.

Wholesale energy prices are 220% higher than in 2003.

The root of which lies here: "In February, the European Commission said some of Europe's biggest energy firms were holding back gas supplies and promised a crackdown on "anti-competitive behaviour".

UK owned and run power firms simply cannot get decent supplies until the european market is properly deregulated. We suffer because we're an island with very little gas resources.

This is price-fixing, but not by the UK companies - they end up being the middleman in the energy war, and they all have to buy their gas from the same place ie Europe.

We need to channel our aggression towards putting pressure on the government to do something about it.
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Not true, we only get 20% of our gas from Europe. The rest is from our own
gasfields. What really irks me is that if we cut down our energy consumption,
they would still increase the prices to keep their profits flowing. We cannot win
so the government may as well have a large windfall tax which would perhaps
make the suppliers stop and think !

Have just changed from powergen to Scottish Power and got £46 cashback from Quidco. I have only been with Powergen for 2 months and got £30 (from quidco) for switching to them from British Gas.

Powergen rates for my area shot up to:

    Elec first 225 units 16.45 remaing 9.33.
    Gas first 1143 units 3.156 remaining 2.51

Just signed up to a standing charge rate with scottish power at:

Elec standing charge 12.84 a day 9.029 per unit after
Gas standing charge 11.64 a day 2.161 per unit after

With all the cashback on offer it is worth going through the hassle of changing.

I have just been quoted by Powergen, as an existing joint fuel customer, a capped price for joint fuel online scheme, with economy 7 until March 2010. They want a further £27 per month ( 30% increase ) to fix the price until March 1st 2010. Since the quoted latest price rises will increase my calculated fuel charge by 19% , I don't see this as a bad deal.
    Anyone any views?

I switched to scottish power and shortly after I switched, they announced 15% rise in gas and 8% rise in electricity. I am glad I didn`t panic into withdrawing as they may well end up being one of the cheaper providers. Says she, typing with an extra jumper on and the heating off, as a sudden snow shower falls outside her window
I know just how you feel. After my last bill(I'm with Powergen Age Concern) I switched off my gas central heating as a form of protest and am wearing extra clothes and using up some coal and logs I had left over.I mean it's the principle of the whole thing ;-) I'll use the money I've saved on my holiday in southern Spain warming up my old bones.Peggy

Im with Powergen Online. Did anyone actually receive a letter/email about the new prices from them yet? I think the prices are to go up on 10th March and Im guessing that they will let us know the cost before that date?
I still need to send in my meter reads, as last time their 'estimates' were a bit wrong, in their favour.
Just feeling a bit down about it really, at the prospect of maybe around £10-15 extra to find every month :(
