MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you flog hideous store cards to keep a job?

  • I definately would not. How can you sell something that you know could cause someone so much misery - as the inevitable debt will do? A lot of people are naive about these things, or don't fully understand the implications.

Having read many comments here, I'm horrified so many people are willing to sell it. Where is everyone's sense of community, of looking out for others????? There are always other jobs if you look hard enough.

It is everyone's own responsibility to inform themselves. Used sensibly, these cards can be used to your own advantage. Sell the advantages as well as the account and advise the customer to think carefully when they use the account. It is not inevitable to be in misery due to debt but it is important to understand the implications of your actions. Store cards may be high interest but they are usually low credit limit.
Cheap and cheerful. Preferably free. :T LBM - more a gradual rude awakening.

  • I would not sell them. I would use charm, and good Hard work in 'all' other departments the job requires, to keep my job. As the proverb goes - 'treat people how you would like to be treated'.

  • I work in a store and am required to sell a store card with a 30% APR - training has been minimal and to date I have managed to avoid issues by highlighting the lack of training. However, I am now being targetted with selling a specific quantity and threatened with disciplinary action through the "performance management" process if I don't achieve the targets. I am disabled and only work part-time - and then at off-peak times. Other staff who work at peak times have a far better chance of selling, but my targets are proportionately the same. I have pointed this out - the response is the same as that when I highlight the impact of the card on sub-prime borrowers - ie "we don't care". Until legislation controls the way in which staff are pressured into selling this crap, staff and customers alike will continue to suffer....

I hate store cards & ditched my only one many years ago. Everyone needs to earn a living, so wouldn't feel any guilt for trying to sell those wretched cards. Haven't got much sympathy for those people who take on these cards. They should read the small print & APR before they sign up & end up in debt.
