I'm going to try and claim back charges from Natwest on a cc and a student account I had. Can't find any staements or anything to give me an account number for the student account though. Closed it approx 3-4 years ago. Any ideas how to get it as I don't think the bank would give me the account number as its a closed account and I obviously need the number to ask for the statements. Help?April £5 a day challenge- £15.05/£1500

you won't need the account number just provide them with your name and address and maybe your date of birth and what type of account it was and they'll look it up. account number only makes there job easier for them not a requirement you have to provide

Hi first posting here
Great tips
I've been reading about claiming bank charges back, and understand you can do the same with credit cards and student loans. Does the same apply for mortgage charges ie for the dd being returned unpaid?Proud to be dealing with our debts - We WANT to be debt free DEC 09

I myself work for a large high street bank and I happen to know that there are many procedures in place for these claim requests.
In my opinion if you have been charged on more than one occasion you know what will happen if the situation occurs again. I would simply advise that you stick to the rules (like the vast majority of customers do) and the bank will stick to their rules.
It has to be one blanket rule to keep it fair.

but since when has it been fair that they charge vast amounts more than it costs them?

I recently sent a letter to my bank based on the template in the consumer action forum to try and reclaim the charges they issued. I received a letter back offering me £50 as a gesture of goodwill. The post recomends rejecting this (as does Martin Lewis who directed me to the post) however i am not sure how to do this and how i should reject it. This probably sounds like a daft question but its just that the first letter i sent was legally sound so i dont want to go sending a letter rejecting the offer and get my self into a situation where i get nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.0 -

yeah but the bank can have their rules but if they unlawful how is that fair?
I can understand you backing the people who pay your wages.
also understand please that it is simply impossible for everyone to always be in credit, life is hard and the unexpected can happen to some people, this is what the banks take advantage off.0 -

Moneyclaim
account 2, halifax credit card, closed, total charges come to around £400, sent same letter, they refuse refund as they are aware of OFT ruling but insist it only says charges are unfair not unlawful? they say go to financial ombundsman but they'll win as charges are a result of me running the account poorly, again i think there just fobbing me off so as above write to FO or just file with moneyclaim?
Moneyclaim
account 3, barclays current account, closed, this one annoys me, they owe around £400, have written them first letter, no response in 3 weeks, rang them they claim to have sent to letters acknowledging receipt of letter and a further one saying there looking into it furthur, have received neither letter and it's at same address since account opened, but magically i still get advertising stuff from them. ring them again they just pass me around departments. do i still pursue them, write to FO or go with moneyclaim?
Moneyclaim
account 3, firstdirect current account, wrote to them with letter requesting refund, they did this, became unemployed missed a cheque payment got another charge, requested refund they granted this but closed my account which is a shame as i liked the account. are they entitled to do this over my enforcing of my rights as they were quite pushy about me reclaiming charges and threatened to close it after claiming first charges if i went od again.
Money... Ooops, sorry, was getting into my stride here
Sadly, they can get rid of troublesome customers, and what with insisting they obey English law, you are obviously a troublemaker.
account 4, capital one credit card, wrote letter requesting refund of £160, they wrote back and refunded £40, wrote back saying not acceptable so they refunded another £40, but now refuse to do anymore saying write to FO ombundsman for other £80, again do i write to FO or go with moneyclaim?
Guess what? Moneyclaim. (you might see a pattern)
account 5, lloyds tsb current account (girlfriends student account). wrote letter requesting refund of about £100, they refused as she agreed to contract, wrote back saying they agreed to conduct it in lawful manner they haven'tetc. they still refused and said go to FO, again go to them or go with moneyclaim? issue here is girlfriend has large overdraft so doesn't want to end up in similer situation as my firstdirect account
Moneyclaim!
They can't close her down while the amounts are in dispute, and when she gets her money back, maybe the charges will help getting rid or part or all of that o/d? Wouldn't that be nice? Meanwhile, make sure she opens a parachute account just in case.
Hope this helps.0
