They can call your overdraft in any time ... do you think what you will be reclaiming will come to more then your overdraft ?

    Hi,

I am guessing that the charges over the last 6 years will amount to around £300ish. Unfortunatly my overdraft remains from my student days and is at £1200. I am returning to being a student in September this year in order to train to become a teacher, so I was hoping that they might return ny account to being a student one again! E.g with free overdraft. I might look into getting a new student account which I can transfer the overdraft to, so I might just request my history at the moment then hold off on the reclaiming until I can either pay back the amount or have got another account set up.

Thanks for letting my know who to make the cheque payable - everyone on this site is so helpful and kind to help each other out. It makes life much easier!

    Just one more question though!....
Do I send the letter/cheque to my local Barclays branch who I bank with or should it be headoffice? Also, if it's local branch is it ok to take the letter in by hand and ask them to give me a receipt to prove that they've actually received it on a particular date?

Thanks to the second person this year who's sat on my cheque for weeks then decided to pay it in on the one day I don't have enough in my account and have forgotten to check it online (not joking, the only day this has happened  ), and of course on the same day that a paypal DD for under a fiver went out, I have now racked up £120 of charges.

Been reading this site for a while but this has finally pushed me into action. Will have to wait a few weeks for yesterday's charges to actually show up on my account but thought I'd get organised in the meantime!

My main question is: as it's not that great a sum should I send a friendly letter of request or just go straight in with the template from CAG? I'm a bit rubbish on the phone and always seem to end up accidentally agreeing it's my fault or something (Tesco Car Insurance - I'm talking to you  ) so I don't want to try ringing them. I'm with Nationwide if anyone's got any experience with them?

Many thanks for such an ace website!

It may be different now with all this bank charge stuff going on, but many a time I have rung my local branch at Nationwide and when I have explained that it really wasn't my fault i.e. I got paid on the same day they just decided to take the money out before putting the money in, they have refunded them. So I would try a phone call this would be better as they can ignore a letter, someone pleading in their ear might work!

Is there a specific money claim form? i was going to use the letter, send it along with my list (from my bank statements) of the charges. I was thinking of presenting the charges in a nice neat table if i can suss out how to do that on Word.
  • Please can someone provide me with some quick advice. I cannot get in to the templates. I have registered and received an email but still cannot get in for some reason.
    Anyone got any advice?

my frst attempt didn't work either, so i registered again & on the 2nd email did exactly the same as with the 1st but it worked. thought it was me as i'm very easily thrown - in fact it takes me ages each time to find this forum! too much information perhaps!
  • Hi my boyfriend had that account and had 3 direct debits refused because he lost his job right before christmas, they wanted to charge him £ 150 for this even though the debits didnt actually go out. We met with one of the managers who advised us not to pay it said hed take care of it. Didnt hear anything back til we started getting letters from debt collection agencies, and now theyve actually got their solicitors to go after him for it. Surely that must cost them more than £150 !!! Anyway now we know the law is on our side about that, id just like to see them take us to court !
  • Just thought id ask again if theres any kind soul who knows if you can reclaim charges on an authorized overdraft?
    Please help
    Thanks

Don't you just hate it when that happens!!! Just posted a really long post and computer crashed!!!! aaaaaaggggghhhh!!!
    Anyway here goes again..
I recieved a second letter from Abbey today from thier head office. It says,
Thank you for your letter dated the 8th June which we recieved on the 12th June, requesting information on your bank account. I also acknoledge recipet of your £10 fee.
Unfortunatley, we are unable to supply a list of charges applied to your account for the last six years because we do not store this information seperately from other transactional data. We can only supply a list of transactions on your account, which will include details of any charges applied.
I would like to advise you that under the Data Protection Act Request, you will only recieved the transactions that are currently held on our systems. Thses will be forwarded to you within 40 days, free of charge, under seperate cover. Any earlier transactions have been archived onto microfiche, which is not covered by the DPA. These archived transactions will not therefore be supplied to you under the DPA request and will not be subject to the 40 day ruling.
We can however supply details of the transactions held on the microfiche on payment of an admin fee of £10 for mutiply monthly statements per account that have been archived.
It is clear from your request that you require the transactional informational that is held on the microfiche records. In order to avoid any additional delays, we will therefore use the £10 that you have sent with your DPA request as payment for the microfiche records that you need. If you do not want use to do this, please call us on the number above.
You have also asked for details of any 'manual interventions' that may have been made on your account and I am sorry that we are unable to help with this request.
I can explain that we consider 'manual intervention' to mean an action that is not automatic or computer driven. Not all manual interventions are recorded, for example if a member of staff look at a paper document relating to your account,a record is not always required. Similarly some interventions may relate to work carried out by a department rather than individuals where no central record of activity is kept because this is not the kind of information we need, or more importantly, that a customer would usually request.
If you have any questions please call us on the above number.

    Banking Services.

Two things I would like to mention here:
When I sent my DPA request letter I asked for two years not six as I have only banked with them for 2 years!!! Therfore I don't need the microfiche records ....shall I ask for my £10 back?
My duplicate statments came today also...all 18 envelopes!!! I've added the charges up and it comes to the whopping total of £1676!!!!
    I'll have that back thankyou!!!
Gonna send the second letter of tomorrow and I'll keep you updated as things go on!!!
Made it - 15 years married!! Finally!! xx:beer:

I've been reading both this thread, and the Barclay's threads with interest. I am a little concerned that so little success seems to have been reported with claims against Barclay's - is this due to confidentiality agreements, or people giving up in the face of opposition (of which Barclay's seem to excel at)?

I plan on submitting a request for all charges levied in the last six years. Annoyingly, I recently destroyed all those statements and letters (!) because I saw no need for them....I had no idea that it would be possible to claim back any charges. Of course, I feel pretty stupid now :)

Given the recent diabolical "service" I have endured at the hands of Barclays recently, I am quite excited at the prospect of getting some revenge. I've spent some time rooting round the library, FAQ and forums, and have come to the conclusion that there is no good reason not to at least try this.
