Anyone know if these arrangements apply to charges levied by the Inland Revenue or Companies House.
For example - Companies House want £250 for late filing of accounts - there's no way it costs them £250 so surely they're punative charges? Or because they're 'the Government' are the rules different?Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.0 -

Charges are stated in T&Cs of banks too. Remember, the term is unlawful, not illegal. So, in short, yes, credit cards too. Finance companies.
Thanks for this - no, never anything in writing; I just phoned and whined / complained until they agreed to refund half, but I was told this was out of the goodness of their heartand they simply couldn't refund more. Now I know .... !!

I cannot register on the bank action website, is there a problem with it? I am just putting a letter in an envelope to nat west as they kindly informed me they this morning that they are ripping me off.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Hello moneysavers. This is my first posting. I can't tell you how chuffed I was to find this thread. I am on benefits and the DWP messed up my claim - meaning I had no money going into my account for a month - and the bank charges I've incurred have really crippled me.
I've written the initial letter to the bank and they have refused to pay. My next step is to start court proceedings. The bank is the Halifax. My question is, do I have to enter the address of the head office of the Bank of Scotland, my branch's address, the address on the reply which they sent me, which was a PO box, or indeed some other address entirely - does anyone know? ?
Also could I just check - my account doesn't have an overdraft facility - does this principle still apply?
Thanks in advance.0 -
when i first met my husband 4 years ago he was paying ouy more in bank charges than he was earning EVERY month and each time he paid in cash to clear it or so he thought the charges would come out a few days later for another amount which would eat up all the cash and so all dds bounced again and more charges incurred and this had been going on forever. i persuaded him to close account and bank elsewhere as after me watching it happen for 6 months it broke my heart to see them get away with this. i worked for nationwide at the time and he swapped accounts which al;so took forever as they kept sending more charges saying account couldnt be closed until they were paid!!!! WELL my problem is this all happened about 2 years ago with the halifax, we dont have any details of account like account number etc and as we no longer have an account with them can we still try and get cash back giving them the limited information that we have????0

use the letter and include the old ac number and sort code. You will be able to claim back for the last six years. Hang in there and be tough with the bank in question and you'll get your money back.
goodluck

You don't need the account number - that is for their convenience only (you are NOT a number etc ....) - just include full name and address plus your husbands address 4 years ago - that should be enough for them. They will keep your details for 6 years in the same format as their live accounts and you don't need an account number to access that.
I've got quite a few charges 6 - 7 years ago so bit annoying but I will check through anything newer - this will really tee my better half off as she has been on at me to shred my bank and cc records older than 2 years - "what use is it !"0 -
I'm sending all my letters to my local branch by recorded delivery. That way I'll know 4 sure they'll receive it and have proof.0

I read the article about getting money back from the bank so I thought I would try it with my credit card provider, Capital one.
I spoke to a bored chav and asked why they had charged me a £20 late payment fee. She muttered on about it's in the contract blah blah. I persisted and said "do you have the authority to refund it on the phone, yes or no?" (knowing that they do). She said that she could but not just because I had asked!!!! So I said I forgot. She reprimanded me a bit like she was scalding a child (I ate my chocolate cake while she prattled on) and eventually she said would refund it, just this once. 5 minute call, freephone number. RESULT!0 -
What about if you went bankrupt with that account? Would you be allowed to claim or not?
Also I had an account with Natwest over three years ago, there's no way I can remember my account number and sort code, so how would I be able to make this claim?0
