As the rep says it is not open source software so no need to provide source code. Would you like to say which vendors make their source available? Providing source code for a security product is self defeating as it provides hackers etc just about all they will need to break the software.

You making the case for what is known as "security through obscurity", a principle which has been thoroughly debunked since at least as far back as 1883. As a relatively new user here I'm not allowed to post links, but I trust you can use Google for yourself to find the plethora of excellent rebuttals and discussions from real-life software developers.

As for vendors of security products which make their source code available, you can look to any of the authors and many commercial vendors of products such as OpenSSH, OpenSSL, GnuPG, GnuTLS, ipchains, Openswan, Clam AntiVirus. These products are in widespead use on desktop machines and servers, have the source code fully disclosed, and are sold and supported by a wide range of well-known companies such as Novell, Oracle, and Red Hat.

Haven't you noticed that everything that you list is open source? Rapport isn't. Ignoring the security aspect why should a company, that is not producing code under GNU or similar open licences, provide the source code for their revenue earning product to allow other companies to copy it?

You get me the source code for MS Windows 7 and I will get you the source code for Rapport

Of course I did. That's exactly what you asked for!

I did not ask for Open Source vendors, I was well aware of those.
This is the same policy as any of the other desktop security vendors.
I hope that this blatantly false statement is the result of your ignorance rather than a deliberate attempt to mislead. There are many, many vendors of security tools who make their source code fully available and actively solicit public scrutiny of it.
I read this as you implying that other mainstream security software vendors e.g. McAfee, Checkpoint, Reflex Magnetics etc actually publish the source code. He had already told you it wasn't open source and he is correct in his assertion that the MAJORITY of desktop security vendors do not make the source code available. I don't believe that CESG has approved any open source security app yet.

You appear to have a bee in your bonnet that everything should be OS.

• A question for Trusteer. I had Rapport installed some time back then uninstalled it (can't really remember why). I installed it again and again uninstalled it (same). Then I saw it was recommended by a small financial institution I trust and I installed it from there. If you read my post #38 in this thread you will see I had trouble making it work.

As I have uninstalled all according to Trusteer instructions but there are still traces, especially in the registry.

To get to my question - despite my scepticism, if I were to install again what would be my best way of getting it to actually work!

Hello,

Reading your post (#38) it seems that you had Rapport running and removed it because you didn’t like the big arrow. The arrow was replaced with a small icon more than a year ago and is now almost unnoticeable.

The failure to get it working again could be as a result of an incomplete removal in the first place. Please contact "support at trusteer.com" and copy this post inside the email. A support engineer will help you to get it up and running. If you also attach your phone number to the email an engineer will call you within one hour.

We appreciate your feedback and are keen to help you getting Rapport working again on your computer.

Thanks

Trusteer Support
• Trusteer,

Does this work with Apple Imacs?

No, you asked for "which vendors make their source available", and I provided you with the names of several products and vendors. I think perhaps you don't understand the meaning of the phrase "Open Source". It means that the source is available. Why would you ask for a list of vendors who make their source is available, and then, after being presented with such a list, tell me that vendors who make their source available don't count?
I read this as you implying that other mainstream security software vendors e.g. McAfee, Checkpoint, Reflex Magnetics etc actually publish the source code.
Since when are Novell, Red Hat, and Oracle not mainstream? Quite apart from your moving the goalposts by imposing this additional restriction, you seem to be making a false dichotomy between "Open Source software" and "mainstream software". There's no reason why software can't be both.
You appear to have a bee in your bonnet that everything should be OS.
Well, if simply wanting to be assured that the software I install on my computer does what it says on the tin means having a bee in one's bonnet, then I guess I have a bee in my bonnet. So far neither you nor I have any proof that Rapport isn't just snake oil. All we have is the word of the vendor. And if that satisfies you, that's fine; good for you. Those of us with a healthier sense of skepticism, however, may wish to demand a bit more proof before letting some third party have unfettered access to our personal computers.

Novell, Red Hat and Oracle are not mainstream security software vendors.

I am sceptical but not to the point of expecting vendors who do not supply open source software, and also state this, to provide all and sundry with source code. That smacks of paranoia.

By all means take the OS route but don't expect everybody else to follow your example. If you do not like commercial closed source software then don't use it. If you do use it then you must also accept the limitations imposed by the vendors. If your bank are now saying that you have to use it then either shut up and use it or change banks. The world does not revolve around you and your idealistic view of things.
