I would INSIST the GP sends you for further investigation, it's not natural to go this length without sleep, regardless of how long you've been putting up with it.

No, I could understand it if I had, only that now I am so wound up about not sleeping that that isnt helping now either.

I know how you feel I find it very difficult to get to sleep and to stay asleep, when I do manage to drift off. I have no worries only the worry of not sleeping it got to the stage of not wanting to go to bed because I would be to tense and worrying about not sleeping ,what made it worse for me is staying in bed in the mornings strange thing is I can sleep like a log between 8 until midday just drift off no problem ,what is helping is to force myself to get up at 7 everyday no matter if I have only slept for an hour I just get up and stay busy all day I feel really awful some days and have to avoid sitting down for to long or I just drift of but slowly I am now improving and for the last 2 nights have managed about 4 to 5 hours sleep which for me is very good when I wake in the the night I force myself to stay awake tell myself I am not allowed to go to sleep and have to keep my eyes open after about 10 mins of this I find that I just drift off .

I was interested to find this thread, as I have suffered very poor sleep patterns for well over 40 years!

I'm certain that the abuse I suffered as a child is something to do with it - I'd be afraid to go to sleep in case something awful happened to me (not logical I know, but small children don't always think logically), and even now, I suffer nightmares when I do get to sleep.

I've tried every remedy known to man, counselling (which made things a lot worse) psychotherapy, herbal remedies, sleeping tablets from the doctor, the whole nine yards.

I now seem to actually be nocturnal; I get up at the same time as my husband, as I need help to get bathed and dressed, and once he's gone to work, flake out for an hour or so. Do a few jobs indoors, health permitting, flake out for an hour in the afternoon. Make dinner and eat, flake out again. Wake up properly about 10pm and stay that way til well after 3am.

Mentioned it to the GP when I was there for a meds check the other week, she says she can't help me.

Oh well, it hasn't killed me yet....
