are you in or near London... there a couple of NZ/Aus shops there where you can buy it...however, IMO the delivery charges are bit steep so best if your able to go into the stores...Also sainsburys sell it, as do morrisons (i think eek- sorry if im wrong on that one)....or if you know someone going to NZ, customs do allow shop purchased unopened and sealed manuka honey into the UK...I know cause ive just had my nephew bring me some
have just checked the sainsburys site..they have Rowes Manuka 15+ there for £10 something...ive cut and pasted the blurb lol...also check out Rowes website as i think they do online sales-the following is from the sainsburys site about the honey
PURE & NATURAL.
ACTIVITY: 15+ this is the level of Manuka honey's special natural antibacterial activity.
4 TASTE STRENGTH: 1=mild. 5=strong.
FLAVOUR: Rich, tangy, herbal and full-bodied.
WELLNESS: Countless thousands of people daily maintain general wellness and digestive health by taking a good spoonful of Manuka half an hour before each meal.
PROVENANCE: From beekeepers in the remote wild green hillsides of New Zealand's North and South Islands.'Normal' is a dryer setting.0 -
thank you kiwi! I saw the 10+ somewhere for £4 but cannot remember where! I will keep an eye out but the sainsbury one in the meantime is great thank you

I was floored after researching about thyroid problems on ThyroidUK (who has a resident specialist) and that the Barnes Basal temp test is the most reliable indicator, that my GP clearly had no idea about it and completely ignored my consistently low readings and symptom checklist taken from ThyroidUK! After taking myself off to a nutritionist to find out more and her diagnosing candida as my problem, then researching about candida, I couldn't believe that the medical profession will recognise it at birth, death and as thrush only! Could they be any more short sighted if they tried??
Have you ever read the What Doctors Don't Tell You book?? Makes for VERY interesting reading and certainly has explained some of the non-sensical appointments I've had with GP's!
Anyway, I wish I knew about Manuka when I was pregnant with my first child! I used to raise my head up on about 3 pillows which was effective rather than faffing with bricks, and laying on your left side has helped me vastly........................although I don't have anything near as bad as you guys.Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. I bought mine in Holland and Barrett on wednesday for £5.99 I think, for a small jar but its only 6+ strength.
I too wish I had known about this when I was pregnant, although all those years ago it would have been classed as witchcraft I think. Tons of chalky jollop was my lot. YUK! I wonder if I have had this all of these years!
My daughters intolerance to artificial colouring was laughed out of the town.....until intolerances became general knowledge. THen her asthma/excezma and hyperactivity just went when I changed her diet.
I do hope this works. : ))0 -
Sainsbury do their own brand of Active 10+ UMF for £5.99. This is the cheapest I've found. Tescos also do it BUT it was £8.49 last time I looked.0
-
Is there really a significant difference if UMF is higher? I gather from this thread and other places online that 10+ and above is high enough for most uses. I was just looking online and noticed that for the Golden Hills variety, 500g costs (approximately looking at the cheapest prices):
UMF 10+ = £14.99
UMF 20+ = £26.99
UMF 25+ = £45.99
Is the difference between 20+ and 25+ really that significant? My wife uses this to treat mild eczema. I've been buying the UMF 10+ from Sainsburys which has been effective, but was just wondering if paying more for a higher UMF would be worthwhile?0 -
From all I read (Lots & lots - before it became popular - which I think I might have had a small part of, as I told everyone & before everyone & their aunt extolled the virtue through advertising it - I don't sell it) then for most people and most problems Active 10+ is sufficient.
For external use some supermarket pharmacies have Active 10+ Manuka that has been treated so it's sterile & still keeps its properties - used to be at the same price as the normal Active 10+.
You actually might find that if you had it tested your Active 10+ is more than that as from what I read often the Active 10+ was 15+ or more but sold as Active 10+ as not consistantly of a higher UMF grade BUT always over Active 10+. HOWEVER now it's gotten more popular they might be mixing with other honey to make it just over 10+
The higher grades are more cost prohibitive - would you use more or less?
Best probably to stick to Active 10+ - which works on just about everything & which you'd tend to use more because of the exhorbitant cost of higher grades.0 -
Thanks for the reply. :money:
Cost wouldn't bother me if 20+ was significantly better than 10+ for various uses. I just get the feeling from what I've read that it probably isn't. I appreciate it's difficult to precisely calibrate (not the correct term I know) something like this, but no online sources appear to give any definitive information.0 -
There ARE sources online - from research papers that quantified the difference that higher grades made. From what I read in most cases Active 10+ (NOT BELOW) is sufficient.
I believe the hospitals using on cancer patients & on MRSA were using Active 15+ but from many sources it was the case a few years back that many 10+ were 15+ or better. I know that the hospitals were paying about £40-£50 for the equivalent size you can get in Sainsburys for £5.99 or so (less then at £4.49-£4.99). My doctor at the time was amazed I purchased at the price I did & started recommending it to all her patients instead of prescribing Omeprazole & the like - which masks the symptoms, rather than CURES like Manuka. The hospital 15+ might just have been tested to that grade whereas the 10+ may have the same test done but as long as it's above 10+ they don't mind how high it goes.
Unfortunately because of all the advertising of Manuka it's now near impossible to find the original clinical trials & the quantification tables they produced. If I hadn't lost all my research (lots done years ago - I research things to the death) due to a virus I'd happily send you the links. I weighed it all up then & was happy to use just the 10+.0
