  • Should manuka honey be refridgerated? Does it lose its healing properties if heated?
  • No it doesn't need to go in the fridge. It will crystallise if you do this.
It does lose some of its' properties if you heat it.
For acid reflux use 1 tsp or so on toast or bread 3 or more times a day about 30mins before food.

Does it have to be on bread or toast? My OH has really bad acid problems and has been taking Mastick Gum and Zantac. He is far worse when he has wheat and oat products too. We don't think it is a gluten problem though.

He has tried Manuka honey for a couple of years but on porridge not bread.
While writing this I did think he could try the honey on ricecakes.

skipton - totally OT - does he eat maize and cereal fibres? they completely kill my digestive system

wishi'dreadsooner - you sound like you have seen the same person as me! He mentioned bricks under the bed and Manuka honey! :) I haven't given it a serious go yet but as I do get bad acid reflux, I must remember to take it. History of H.pylori in family too

  • I've taken by itself. Warm (not hot!) porridge would be OK. Ricecakes should be fine.

The consultant I saw didn't mention Manuka - just propping the bed up on bricks & carrying on with the Omeprazole. I was REALLY peeved when I found out about Manuka as the research was NOT new & in 90% or more of cases, as long as it is taken regularly for long enough it's a CURE. Believe me I had VERY bad acid reflux, never slept a full night & now I have NO problems.
You'd think consultants would keep up with what is available! BUT - call me a sceptic, the asset rich drug companies do like to sell their products!

    OH can't eat maize either.

I'm always surprised at how many consultants and doctors are not upto date with new things.
My mum has been to the doctors a few times clutching articles she has read and asking them for more details only to find she is informing them.

I had a mild case of athlete's foot on and off, and one of my toenails got a fungal infection (not very nice!!) - I put some of the honey on my toe (only once for about 20 mins), and hey presto - it's killed the infection, and sorted it right out..! no athlete's foot at all since.. I swear by the stuff now..

    Hi
I have just been diagnosed with hiatus hernia and gerd after a gastroscopy yesterday.
I had my gall bladder removed in january and was admitted as an emergency to a different hospital 2 days after dischage and sent home 8 days later having found nothing.....

Now they tell me I have HH and gerd (may not have needed the gall bladder out after all) and I need to take lansoprazole prob for life, so Ive read this forum and been out and bought a jar of manuka honey 6+.

Ill let you all know what happens!

I dont think it will have any effect on the HH but just to be rid of this awful acid and pain would be great.

Im from NZ and I can 100% state that Manuka honey can be used for putting on skin wounds to aid healing...I have been bought up on the stuff, and have had it on sandwiches, toast, on cuts, when we have a cold/sore throat its brilliant with some lemon juice, honey to taste and boiled water...just sip it ...store it in the cupboard with the vegemite lol and it will be just fine....oh and one other thing thats important...the 'medicanial' Manuka honey is the honey with the UMF rating of 10 or more...

Thank you for that. The one I bought is 6+ so I'll make sure and ger the 10+ next.

I have to say I purposely have not used the lansolprazole for the last 2 1/2 days, just the honey 3 times a day and I have far less acid already. Co-incidence? we will see!! : )
