I know that the staff were just doing their job but i am so angry i had to vent somewhere.
I went to buy the Mothers Day 'Meal for 4 for £15' at my local Marks and Spencers.
Got to the till. Girl puts everything through. 'Do you want a bag for life for 10p?' 'Yeah, go on then.'
Bags it up for me.
Then says 'Have you got any ID for the bottle of wine?'
I'm 27.
And despite my efforts, I know I don't look any younger than 25 on a good day. And today is not a good day.
Me: 'Um, what kind of ID do you take? I only have my student card with me that has my DOB on...'
Hands over NUS card.
Cashier: 'I don't think we take these, but i'll ask my supervisor' (beeps supervisor)
(At this point I am thinking 'I know for a fine fact that they will say they don't take NUS, but maybe when the supervisor gets here she will realise that I am indeed old and decrepid and clearly not under the age of 18')
There are 5 people in the queue behind me now, all craning their necks to see what the hold up is. I am beginning to contemplate making a run for the shop door before my face turns an even darker shade of beetroot. I have never wanted to see someone more than this supervisor.
...waiting...
Cashier: 'Do you not have your passport or driving license?'
Me: 'No. I don't drive and had just popped into town to buy this for my Mum so I didn't think I'd be needing my passport.'
...more waiting...
Cashier has now started to go red and is apologising profusely.
...more waiting...
Supervisor arrives (eventually ), looks at NUS card and says 'No, sorry we don't take these.'
Me: 'Ok, so I can't buy this now?'
Supervisor: 'You can buy the other things just not the wine'
Me: 'Right, so I can have the other three items for £19.97, rather than paying £15 and getting the wine?'
Supervisor: 'Yes'
Much the same here at Christmas, was buying a gift set of a tiny bottle of whiskey and a game - queued for ages, everything put through. I'm 24 and Ir eally don't look younger than my age - the woman wouldn't sell me it and asked if I had any id.
I have zero id for proof of age other than birth certificate and obviously didn't have it on me, not that she would probably accept it as it's not photo id.Homer: Don't you worry about Wikipedia. We'll change it when we get home.

This thread reminded me - I buy petrol from the garage down the road (Small Shell one) - They happily sold me Petrol for my bike (when I was 16) and then sold me petrol for my car (when I was 17) with no ID at all - but they wanted to see ID to sell me a lottery ticket.
Wait, what?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
if your provisional has a picture of yourself on it aswell as DOB it should be accepted!
i think it's hard to look at someone and judge how old they are!
There's a girl who comes in the shop with a baby which she thinks is ample proof that she's old enough to buy alcohol.:starmod:If you dance with the devil, the devil don't change. The devil changes you:starmod:0 -
Can someone explain the logic of having to prove your age to buy a bottle of wine if you look UNDER 25 when the legal age for wine buying is 18? Who thought it up and why?
I had the same thought. Why not under 30 or even under 40. It seems that supermarkets have decided to alter the law of the land; and yes I am aware that they can choose who they sell to.
As I have said before - support the smaller shops and take some of the power away from the multi-national retailers.0 -

It's not the fact of having to provide ID that bugs me, but that some things are acceptable and others are not
. I appreciate some shops (and banks and other service providers for that matter) have to know your age, but who decides what shows your age/ID? I was recently asked for a utility bill as well as my drivers license (with photo) to prove my ID - what's that all about then?

I worked at Tesco doing a Christmas job on the checkouts. We had the training videos, which were very good and hit the point home.
When it comes down to it, if you sell an underage person alcohol, you personally can end up with a Criminal Record.
Nevermind worrying about the fine you personally may have to pay. A lot of people are under the misapprehension that it's just the multi-million pound company who get fined a few thousand and that's the end of it. Worst case, you make that store lose their booze licence! But even when, as a worker, you don't really care about the store, or the company, or even the thread of getting fined yourself.. nobody wants to put "Yes" in that 'Have you ever committed a criminal offence' box on job application forms. Especially in the current climate.
Even if you're 30, and haven't got ID, so hand it to your obviously aged friend to buy it, it's the same principle as buying it for kids, and it has the same consequences.
People look sooo different from their ages these days... take a look at '10 Years Younger'! A 17 year old heavy smoker slappin on the make-up could easily look 25. I regularly got served in pubs when I was 13, partly cuz I'm tall, wore a lot of slap, and walked in there as if I owned the place! My mum is 60 but can easily get away with early 40s. (Which is a pain when I'm trying to get her a senior discount!) Who gets asked for ID to prove they're a pensioner!! :rotfl:
While I understand there are some areas where it should be common sense, please remember it's just as embarrassing for the checkout staff to ask you to confirm your age, and repeat it when you look at them incredulously as if they're complete idiots.
However, worrying about someone else's inconvenience of not being able to buy that bottle of wine, pales in comparison to the threat of a criminal record.
Please understand - we have to ask. It's just not worth the risk.
(I do think the store trying to stop the daughter from carrying out the beer was flippin stupid!)
If you regularly have trouble being asked for ID, and you've got someone with you obviously old enough / has ID with them, then just make sure you get them to carry the booze separately before you get to the till, so they can pay for it themselves. Most of us want to help you have a good night0 -
I can't drive and have no intention of going abroad so do not want to pay money for a passport. I do not want to carry my birth certificate around and believe it or not this is not always acceptable.
What can I do to prove how elderly I am? Bore on for England about how I can remember when all this was fields?Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
