    Hi all,

I planted some curly type lettuce 2 weeks ago indoors, in one of those punnets you get apples/pears in. I don't know what I've done wrong, because they have germinated, but now are over an inch long, with just 2 little leaves, but very very spindly and falling over. I don't think they'll make it. Does anyone know why this might be. Only thing I can think of is that I didn't plant them deep enough? I'm new to this and have planted loads of stuff recently, but I can see me giving up if this is the result of my first efforts! Help! Please.

They are growing too talk because it is too dark in your house and thay are looking for the sun...

You need to give them as much light as you can - sunny windowsill etc, as soon as they germinate or they will grow upwards tall and thin looking for light.

I planted my mixed leaves yesterday in an old bucket. Cos lettuce will be sown direct into my bed in a couple of weeks time.

I had a pot of lettuce I planted in about September. (Cos lettuce, I think).

It's somehow survived the winter and is looking almost ready to eat... I'll give it a couple of weekss. It's been outside the entire winter, on a south-facing patio in London.

Given a lettuce seed is about a thousandth of a penny, you may as well plant the seeds and see what happens.

I sowed some early endive (a hardy frilly leaved salad plant) back in February. If you don't have a greenhouse, you can make a miniscule one by cutting the bottom off a large 5 litre square bottle of mineral water. It should be just big enough to slide in a tray of lettuce seedlings. Put in a sunny spot in your garden with the open end up against a wall or fence for added protection. I find a few lettuce plants will germinate quite early in this way and you seem to get better light growing them outdoors like this rather than on an indoor window sill so your plants are stronger and less spindly.
