Computer jobs while at Uni!!!! (experienced!)

  • haha.. I was at staffs in 98/99. Computing Science degree.. did first year and then moved to University of Ulster and finished off my degree.. Now an IT Analyst @ BBC. I still remember the watery cheap pints & some guy who would roller skate round the halls at 5am in nothing but swimming trunks.. those were the days..

I remember looking for part-time work when I was there, I had no luck. I did bits of webdesign and server admin for a few different people [not local to stafford].. What i did back then was much more sought after than it is now though.. I made enough not to need to get a loan..

There is such a high number of IT students in the area - am sure it'd be hard to find a part-time IT related job. It's worth asking everywhere - I know guys I lived with worked in M&S, they got good pay, flexible hours and very cheap food! I know other guys did bar work.. I couldn't face that to be honest... Any recruitment agencies nearby? dreaded call centres? Try selling some crap insurance policies to people who don't want em?

Good luck with Uni and finding some suitable employment! Remember - only do as much paid work as absolutely necessary, get out, get drunk, meet new people and enjoy yourself.

yeah... I do remember that from Stafford - really bad girl/lad ratio.. although I found that the geeky blokes didn't tend to go out... So it evened out in the evenings....
  • You really can't be a taxi driver without a license though. Or sell booze.

I heard a great way to get round this. There are was a beach party somewhere and some people wanted to sell alcohol, but couldn't do it without a license. So they bought tons of lollipops and sold each one for 2 pounds each and you got a free can of beer!

So basically charge them £5 for looking inside the car.. meanwhile its driving from one place to another :D

    Getting Urgent

Sorry to bring an old thread back up

Its now the summer. I STILL have no job. I still need money urgently.

So now i'm at home in buckingham. Near Milton Keynes or could drive to Birmingham (about 1 hour 30 mins away though).

Either way I reallllly need a job. I don't fancy doing retail (stacking/shelving) because the pay's crap, the hours are crap, and ye no point.

So please if anyone has any really good reliable ideas please share!

I can fix near all computer problems home users find.. do you think if i create a web page and advertise well this could be a reliable form of income over the summer?

Thanks for all your help. Appreciated

Worth a look on the small biz & charity board for posts about promoting a new business. Your advertising will have to include more than a web page, obviously, but unless you get lucky I think you'll struggle to get a reliable income over the summer, because I suspect a lot of business will be word of mouth recommendation. Sorry to be pessimistic on that front.

Working in a cinema might be more fun than shelf-stacking? Can you get to one of them? See 'Getting a job ... hard work!' thread!
