  • Hi all,

Just found this excellent thread and am hoping someone here will be able to answer my plea for help.

Weighed myself on those electronic torture things they have in Boots yesterday and found that I now weigh 12 stone

That’s the heaviest I’ve ever been in my entire life
and I really want to do something about it.

Followed the SW plan(s) online a couple of years ago and would really really love to go back to it. Trouble is, last time I did SW I came unstuck where Dinners are concerned.

Basically, my boyfriend can’t stand garlic – I can use maybe one clove if I crush it up into a puree (i.e hide it well) and if the rest of the dish is quite spicy.

Otherwise I get nothing but moans and complaints that Garlic is the only thing he can taste at dinner time (similar story with chilli)

It got so bad last time that we had constant rows about it with him shouting that he wanted to go back to ‘normal eating’ (i.e Bolognese Sauces from a jar, other packets etc etc)

Consequently I stopped following the plan because I figure it’s no good doing everything to the letter during the day and then destroying all of that effort once evening comes!

Thing is, I love garlic and think it’s an essential ‘flavour adder’. Bought the latest SW magazine yesterday and there are loads of wonderful recipes in there I’d like to cook but the majority of them do feature garlic.

This is all sounding a bit nuts now that I’m actually writing it down but it really caused a lot of misery in our house last time and I don’t really want to go back to that.

Soooo, if anyone out there has any ideas on alternatives to garlic I’d be really grateful if you could humour me with a reply.

I’ve talked to a few of my colleagues in the office one of whom is doing Weight Watchers but the thought of counting every single thing that goes into my mouth fills me with absolute horror!!!

Please please please lovely people save me from that fate :D

    Thanks in advance!

My DH is like this about root ginger. I used to dislike it but in the last few years found I love it, and a tiny bit added to a bolognaise or curry is lovely, but he won't have it!

Things you could try is, what about a different flavour adder, in my bolognaise I do put garlic but obv mixed herbs too and also a few spoons of marigold boullion powder! It gives it a lot of flavour and thickens it up lovely and is free on green, not sure about red as I never do it.

Also could you cook the dinner, take his out then add the garlic last, it won't be quite as strong a taste as it is not infused as well but you could add a whole bulb if you wanted to as he couldn't moan- except afterwards if you wanted a kiss! :)

Also not sure how many points it is but you can get garlic puree, so you could add that to yours at the end as it is very strong, it is bound to be synned though as it is mixed with oil I think.

    HTH.

Karen I only do green days and I lost 2 stone in 6 weeks, and now have lost another 7lbs in 2 weeks, if you stick to it to the letter then you can lose on just green if you don't want to do red days. I have another 1.5 stone before I reach target! :D

I don't think any of what you say is nuts! Im in the same boat really. I can diet all day long and follow the SW plan. My trouble comes in the evening. My DD1 is very fussy and I already have to cook separate things for her (she is very underweight and I try constantly to feed her up - she doesn't take after me:rolleyes:). My OH is a bit fussy too and likes pies, fry ups and roast dinners. He won't touch curry or chilli or anything like that.

So if I am following SW I have to cook one meal for me and possibly DD2 (who isn't fussy), one meal for OH and one meal for DD1. I made cottage pie on Monday and DD1 has to have chicken in hers because she won't eat mince. I was going to put a swede mash on top of mine but I always put the whole thing in one big dish. So I put the swede on my plate so I could mash it in with the potato on my plate and only grated cheese on half of the pie. I put everything on the table, went in the kitchen to get the veg and when I came back my OH had piled the half without the cheese onto his plate! He hadn't noticed that this was the half without the cheese! I didn't say anything and just tucked in to the rest of the pie!

Thanks so much for those ideas. I'll def. try the Marigold powder as I can't usually get enough taste into my home made bolognaises (even w. garlic lol)

I'm not keen on deviding every portion of dinner so I can have garlic and not him. It's enough that I cook virtually every meal in our house when we both work full-time (grumble grumble)

    Thanks again!

:rotfl: :T That made me laugh!! Good for you, think you deserved that cheesey half after all that effort!

Hats off to you for even attempting to follow ANY kind of plan with the many different tastes and needs in your family. Men eh....can't live with em, can't kill em.....:p
