I tried the Atkins diet a long time ago. The worst thing about it for me was that it cost an absolute fortune. In the long term any weight I lost returned as soon as I stopped it. It was too difficult (for me) to follow for a long time anyway.

If you go to SlimmingWorld you can follow the "green" plan - unlimited pasta, spuds, rice, and cheap as chips (except chips have to be rationed because of the fat content).

They also have a plan which amalgamates the "red" and "green" plans. Eat as much pasta, spuds, rice as you like AND scoff as much meat and fish as you like all on the same day. Quite severe limits are put on milk and mayonnaise and things like that, but it does shift the pounds. The emphasis actually goes onto fruit and veg and encourages you to eat more of those. You don't need any supplements because you would be getting everything you need from proper food.

Atkins = extreme fad diet IMO.

I haven't actually done it, but I have read his book the new Diet Revolution.
For what its worth, I think Atkins had something, but he did not really understand what. It is a massive subject and controlled experiments are extremely difficult due to the number of factors that could influence weight gain/loss.
There was a BBC programme called Diet Trials (a few years back) one of their conclusions was that people on Atkins actually ate less, even if they were allowed to eat what we would consider the wrong foods. I guess that is believable because the Atkins diet is bland and many of the foods that we can overeat easily are banned on the diet, desserts chocolate etc.
The down side to this (and all other diets) is that if you revert back to your present lifestyle you will gain it back (and some), so think of a permanent change that you could adjust to rather than a specific diet.
    Good Luck, Haggis :j

I did it for about 3 months - I did lose a lot of weight but it is very restrictive. Good luck eating out - even on a day out shopping, you really struggle to find anything to eat. going to macdonalds and buying a burger and picking off the bread, sauce, gherkin etc. YOu have the worst breath ever- eg you can smell your own breath sometimes and it can really really really knock your confidence!

Theres no doubt you lose weight any low carb plan will do that - no problem.

IM about to start Slimming world extra easy, and will follow this in a low carb fashion. ( ie I wont eat the unlimited potatoes or pasta, but will eat plenty of veg)

Extra easy really does what it says on the tin, my sister has done it and now she is a consultant and has managed to stick comfortably to the plan for the last year or so and looks and feels amazing. she is encouraging me. I probably only have about 3/4 of a stone to lose but lots of my eating is out of control and I do eat chocolate every day
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I've only ever done the red diet on slimming world, what is the difference to the extra easy?

I would think the red diet is fairly low carb if you watch your wholemeal bread etc.

Lynz you sound like a bit of a yoyo dieter (many people are, there is a whole industry out there).
Consider this, every one I have met will give you a target of how much they want to lose, and often a timescale too (lb a week or 2lbs a week for the next so many weeks). How long has it been since you were last at the weight that you want to get to? Would it be feasible to take the same time to get back to that weight? Why not? :j

I did my own version of the Aitkins diet last year, Im vegetarian so it was basically a low carb diet with protein from quorn, cheese etc. I lost about a stone in 6 weeks. t worked really well, I was hungry at times and did have the occasional pasta dish but cut out potatoes, white bread, chips, crisps and chocolate completely and really cut down on my alcohol intake.

I need to loose another stone was thinking about starting again next week. Got to get my head around it all again first though.

I wondered if anyone who is or has been on the Atkins diet would share their experience of it.

I am about to go back on the slimming world diet but read a little about Atkins and would like to find out more.

If you are on/have been on the Atkins did you take the supplements they recommend?

    Thanks

I only ever Atkins now. I havent eaten a carb in donkeys years after having lost over half my body weight on it.
