As somebody who is considering this diet, I have a few questions.
For carnivores: considering the high costs associated with protein, does anyone find living on a low-carb diet more expensive?
Vegetarians : regarding saitey, is it possible to feel much fuller (for longer) on this diet?0 -

Hi, I can only answer the second question. My diet is mostly vegan. Before I began low carbing I was hungry all the time, even when I was full. I now eat a fraction of the food that I used to ea,t although still more than many people here, and I rarely feel the ravenous hunger that I used to feel and never want a snack after my evening meal. I also no longer have spells of low blood sugar which used to plague me.0 -

I think that it depends where you shop. Vegetables are cheap in Aldi, especially when on offer at 39 / 49p. I also buy a free range chicken 1.5kg for £4.99 from there, cheese is cheaper and free range eggs are 15 for £2.19. However I tend to buy organic mince, beef etc when on offer or 3 for £10 in Sainsburys. I only buy free range or organic chicken, eggs and beef as my GP suggested it due to the fact the they can otherwise be pumped with hormones and antibiotics. Other meats etc I get where there are offers.
Add into the fact that you won't need bread, rice, crisps, cereal .... and the overall cost should be similar or only a little more.

Yes, aside from the carb angle, there's mounting evidence that wheat is ruining peoples' lives. The shocking thing (for me anyway), is that wheat is found in a whole myriad of foodstuffs (usually processed).0 -

I'm veggie, and started on low carb mid November. I've stayed on 20g as have found it easily doable but will probably increase gradually at some point.
I have definitely felt MUCH fuller for pretty much all of the time since starting. It's hard to believe as the portion sizes have been small, and yet I've never been hungry - in fact I've been through phases of being so full that I can't face any more food.
I'm getting used to it now - but still odd to see my husband with our old style of meal (fresh veg, potato and some sort of meat) in my old style of size, then my tiny plate. I can't imagine how I used to eat all that before lol.
So yes, so long as you're eating sufficient protein (I aim for 60g per day) then you will definitely be full.0 -

spinach 100g cooked contains 452mg
half avocado is 420mg,
mushrooms 100g raw 364mg
kale 100g raw 447mg
swiss chard 100g cooked 549mg
sprouts 100g 389mg
courgettes, asparagus and green beans are all between 200 - 250mg per 100g
They are good for fibre and are the only lowish carb options that I have found unless someone here can suggest anything else? The recommended daily intake is between 3500 & 4700g. I might try having eggs on spinach with cheese for breakfast as 4 nuggets of frozen = 100g cooked + I always have half an avocado a day anyway.
Any good recipes using the above would be greatly appreciated
Hi Sheila!
All the highlighted in your list work well in a green smoothie. Sadly carbwise you really do need an apple to make them palatable. If you really do want to increase the potassium then a few extra carbs in apple form may not be that much of an issue.
I'd try
1 apple
spinach
avocado
kale
Cucumber
juice of half a lemon
Fresh parsley.
You'd be surprised how good it is - add ice near the end.
Also, herbs are very good for potassium and may be the way round carb count.

I can get big bunches of various fresh herbs cheap from our award winning market :rotfl: Maybe that's the way to go?

I never ate much avocado before low carb, but now that it's particularly beneficial I've made an effort to buy them.
Haven't done any actual dishes with them, but found them to be delicious chopped up in a salad, extra tasy with a dab of mayonnaise!
Today I've had:
Breakfast - 2 quorn sausages, fried egg and a tomato
Lunch - cauliflower, coconut and cardamom soup
Dinner - aubergine rarebit with steamed asparagus and spinach
Happy weekend everyone!0 -
Hi all!
Dukanning (attack) since Weds and lost 4lbs as of this early morn. :j Continuing till Monday then adding in veg, as per cruise phase.
Expect to have lost 6lbs by Monday morn.
Wheat - bad for me. Digestive system is now back to normal, Had a few mini vanilla slices Boxing Day. They were good:eek:
Can see my carb face reducing and my waist slightly smaller as the evil leaves my body. :rotfl:
Been drinking 1.5L of water since Weds, made it to 2L today. Will keep that up over weekend and next week.
Still a caffeine freak so will be switching to Green Tea Monday. Still having 2 cups in a morn but that's it. Done it before and really enjoyed itBetter than the 6-8 cups of instant I'm up to at the mo :rotfl:
One step at a time! :j  :T
Big love

Yep, aside from the carb angle - wheat is almost everywhere!
Cooking from scratch is the best way to ensure wheat free. Even then - read the label on the food you are using. :rotfl:
I found that eating white bread - once panini, then checked the effect about 3 weeks later with cheesy garlic bread - makes me feel like I'm coming down with flu 2 days later! and increases my waist size by 5 inches
This is maybe not just wheat but the bleaching process and the massive amounts of yeast used to cut down process time. Still - never eating shop bought white bread again in the UK.
Because in Switzerland, whilst eating white bread gave me the expected bloat - albeit to a much lesser degree - it did not give me any other issue. Their brown didn't seem to have any obvious effect at all.
I do find that if I have no wheat at all for 3 months or more, I can take a small amount and I'm fine. However if I have a bit a day over 3 days - back where I started. So no wheat for me :rotfl:
