absolutebounder - I use fitday to assess what I eat and always have at least, if not more, of all of the vitamins, minerals and fibre that I need each day to stay healthy.
Having followed a low carb diet for 15 months now, with the odd blip, I now know what I need to keep a balance and feel much better, and lighter for it. I may miss a few things but have learned to adapt and enjoy what I eat. Also, when you have followed it for a while then the occasional extra may put you over but you know that it will come off again. I have been trying to lose weight and get healthy since I reached 30 and thought that eating fruit, jacket potatoes etc was the way to go, following weightwatchers for most of the time. I found it really hard to lose weight but then stumbled across a candida diet and tried that. It is essentially low carb and I adapted it myself, using guidelines, until I got to where I am now, nearly 62 and 6 stone+ lighter. I have quartered my stomach meds and having so much more energy.

Nobody is knocking you for what you think, it is just that we are following a low carb diet and some of your suggestions could be misconstrued by those who are trying to glean information and are new to it.

Whatever works is what I believe, as long as it is healthy and backed by research.

Off to have my almond pancake with berries and cream :)
  • Wow Sheila... that is amazing. :T Well done losing 6 stone. Do you actually count how many carbs you have per day? I haven't been doing that and wonder if I should. So far I have cut out all bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, wheat etc. I am really enjoying it so far (even though I've only been doing it 6 days, lol. However, I really really want to lose weight as I can't have my knees operated on until I lose weight. Do you think I should count carbs? What would be the recommended amount daily?

I don't think you needed to apologise - has someone said something?

You are just standing up for what we all believe and practice, it is a big subject and a big learning curve for all of us; whilst there is no substitute for not doing your own research, the information on here is really useful.

People are generally LC'ing for a reason, and whilst it would be wrong to knock the value of parsnips and bananas (just as 2 examples ;)) as part of healthy eating, they are probably not the first choice of most people who are trying to restrict carbs, and so probably not the most ideal foods to bring up on a low-carb thread.

Wasn't that what you were saying?

No, no-one's said anything and, to be honest, once I'd summarised the previous posts I didn't expect anyone too - when you see the list in black and white it becomes very obvious that the motivation is ill-will rather than support. And I feel my belief and outspokenness has been more than validated by what inspirespirit has said.

All foods have a place (even if it's only to make us feel ill LOL, my guts are particularly noisy tonight, I sound like the Northern line on a busy morning.) So if you're really struggling with cramps and can cope with banana every day that's fine, I'm quite jealous of Chameleon being able to chug them down with gay abandon but obviously her blood sugars aren't so sensitive as mine.

I can't wait to get back to eating properly low carb again. I was rather beginning to enjoy the extra energy and going out and looking and feeling better - roll on the next 4.5 weeks, hopefully I'll fit the coeliac test in and be back to 'normal' before bonfire :D HAving to add the wheat in again is severely constraining my food choices - bleugh!

daska - you are doing so well and I know how much wheat / gluten gives me wind / pain so it can't be easy. Look at it that you are a quarter of the way already.

inspirespirit - I try to aim at 50 carbs a day overall as that suits me. I go lower for a week or two if I have had a bit of a splurge and higher if I go out, cheat etc. Today it will be nearly 100, which is highly unusual, but I went out for breakfast and had porridge and a cappuccino for a treat. I am lucky enough not to have diabetes so am happy to have higher than the 20 that some manage on. If you wanted to lose weight quickly then lower is better but I find it difficult to maintain that level myself. There are many people on this thread who have inspirational stories to tell and we all just try to support and encourage one another. Feel free to ask any questions and someone will pick it up and help you.

murphydog - sorry that all is still upside down but let's hope that in a few months it will just be a distant memory. I had to move out of my house 2 years ago for 8 months due to flood damage and can remember the stress it caused but that is but a memory now.
  • :undecided Daska, I am agreeing with you - and I don't eat bananas ;)

Oops sorry, just re-wrote to make it clear I wasn't disagreeing with you but confirming that no-one had said anything via PM - all the comments made were placed here, out in the open.

    sorry :o

  • Humans are funny things. Some of us have to always have someone to look down on. In this thread, no doubt there are those who use it to feel superior. But I'm quite a simple soul. I have cut out most carbs, not all. I came to this thread coz its a LOW carb thread, not a ZERO carb thread. I guess its what suits the individual. But I do wish people would stop getting wound up about things that wont matter a jot when we are minutes away from death... I doubt we will be lying there with the nurse holding our hand in our final moments - thinking.. oh.. I wish i'd eaten less carbs! ha ha ha. x

Nor, 'I wish I'd eaten more bananas' LOL

As a low carb support thread - that's what we should concentrate on. Wouldn't want to be on that death bed sooner than necessary :rotfl:

Think we just want to stay on topic else what's the point of this lovely place?

    I like it here.

Is there is anyone on this thread that eats zero carbs? If there is I've not picked up on it. I really can't imagine eating only meat, I know it's possible (more than sufficient evidence for that) but I reckon it would be very boring. :(

I would probably find myself regretting eating carbs if I were lying there waiting for an amputation as a result of diabetic complications but otherwise it'd be "I wish I'd managed to travel more, go to more gigs, have more children... why do I have to go NOW".

I don't know if it would be possible to eat zero carbs - they're sneaky them carbs, get everywhere :rotfl:

I've happily been full n healthy on less than 20g carb a day (~1000 cals too) 5/7 but whilst I didn't lose weight, I didn't increase either :rotfl:

Think I'd be lying there, at the end thinking - hope the cats are ok :rotfl:
