    hiya

    Grey Malkin - thank you

AB - i cant do that, if i have sweets/choc then I will binge on it, and yes i do know why but i dont do it on low carb. Also if i have high carb food like pasta, my asthma gets bad so having a bit of it isnt an option for me anymore. I have to be low carb so i do try to do it right and have lots of veg/salad and only very occasionally have the sugar free stuff.

Inspire - hiya, i do low carb on a budget. i am lucky that i have a cheap butchers near me that i stock up on meat once a month. i buy lidl's cheese/meat when its on half price weekend. i shop around for veg/salad stuff. my shopping bill has not gone up since low carbing, i just shop better! :D

This weekend will be interesting for me, going to party in the park so will be drinking and eating, got some almonds and pork scratchings to take just in case there is no low carb stuff.

and my sister is making me low carb pizza with almond flour later so will let you know what its like. she said it was expensive though so unlikely that i will buy it even if it is nice! :p

    Have a good weekend everyone.

    Hi all,
have been lurking periodically as my mind is on other things! The tenants in the house we are buying have now found somewhere and we have a date that ties in with moving from here, we can't exchange on that until they are out, and we haven't exchanged on our current house, because of problems down the line. There always seems to be something that pops up at the last minute to put things back, and it is soooooooooo frustrating.

Our bank valuation said future saleability could be affected due to the nearby railway line! Well, this was news to us, but slightly worrying nevertheless, so as my husband is off work at the mo, we've been up to have a look. Standing on the railway bridge we could only hear the oncoming train when it was almost on top of us, 10 seconds later it was gone, and it is over 1km away from the house! You can't see it, let alone hear it, we can't fathom why it was even worth the comment.
But heyho, these things are sent to try us

Anyway enough about my trivia, need to add my congrats to JJJ, well done you :T

Sheila, you mentioned tummy ache and exercise, you didn't say whether you had a good time?

Re flax, I still haven't had any but haven't dropped any more so the jury's out, I might reintroduce it next week and see what happens.

Duck is on offer at Sainsburys at the mo - same price as their organic chicken so I'm roasting a duck for the first time tonight. So many ways of cooking it, slow or 'normal,' not quite sure what's best, any tips?
  • Ooh, murphy, you've had a bit of a time of it with that house! Hopefully by the time you come to sell it, the railway line will no longer be an issue. I'm sure it's someone's job to sit there thinking up new ways to ruin your day :(

Hello inspire  I can only echo what others have said about buying good, cheap low carb stuff. I think my food bill went up a bit at first, but then I got more organised at spotting low carb bargains and batch cooking and freezing. I don't think I'm spending that much more now.

I still have some duck in the freezer last time they were on offer at sainsbury's. My favourite way of cooking is to stick it in a roasting bag (on medium heat) with a lemon squeezed over it, and a satsuma stuck up it's unmentionable :D. I tip the juices into a pan, add a glass of red wine and reduce. No idea how many carbs, but it's jolly nice.

Is there any chance I could join in please? I have tried virtually every diet known to man without success. I've been reading through this thread and I have checked the websites off page 1.
I am desperate to lose weight.
Just a question though. Is this diet expensive to do? I have been tending to fill up on rice, beans and pasta (all allowed on SW diet and cheap). I am on a really strict budget. I have tried to follow SW avidly, but may lose a lb but then put it back on the following week. Real yo yo-ing.
I do cook from scratch and I think I eat healthily, but still very overweight.

My tip is to make friends with with your local supermarket staff and find out when they do the second wave of reductions in the meat cabinet - e.g in our local Tesco that is about 2.30-3pm, the Co-op do it about 12.30. Stock up when it's there :D

Eggs are your friends, frittatas are really useful as they keep for a few days - try tuna and spinach with some sesame seeds.

It's the protein that is expensive - you can grow lettuce on your windowsill if necessary. But check how much is recommended, it's not a huge amount. Fill up on salad and don't stint the good fats as mentioned earlier: cook with coconut oil, ghee, lard, and use butter and olive oil (not for cooking with). Up your salt at the start, as your body dumps water the sodium/potassium ratio can get out of step if you aren't consuming enough.

And try your local charity shops and library for a selection of low-carb books, you can wing it but they'll give you a better understanding of how it works and what myths to ignore. My favourite 'chunky' read is the Art and Science of Low Carbing by Phinney and Volek.

sheila - I'm seriously considering buying the next size up in trousers to cope with it. I do find it a little better if I don't mix the fat and the carbs (doesn't mean I like quark though LOL)

murphy - ignore them, you're buying it aren't you, so obviously it doesn't make it unsaleable. glad to hear it's all working out finally.
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
    48 down, 22 to go
Low carb, low oxalate Primal + dairy
From size 24 to 16 and now stuck...
  • Thank you so much everyone for your warm welcome and tips. My son is doing this with me also and his eyes lit up when I told him he could have pork scratchings :)
Think it will take me a while to get SW out of my head. I love curry and will happily eat it without rice, I'll just put loads of veg in it as well as meat. Can you use curry paste? I prefer it to the powder but haven't used it for yonks cos of the oil in it.
Bacon and eggs sound yum for breakfast too but what else would you have if you weren't having this please? I have been having porridge with fruit or toast. I need to completely rethink my eating.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone. :)

murphydog - I had a really great time, thanks for asking :) However I have overdone the push ups and now have sciatica which is driving me mad. I really must try stretches and warm up first.
Sorry about the house but we will keep everything crossed for you until it all goes through. Let me know when you reintroduce flax / seed mixture as I really miss it. You mentioned hemp seeds before I think; do they taste similar?

daska - at least you will appreciate cutting the gluten back out again when it is done :D

inspirespirit - curry with veg is really nice and thickens the sauce. I often add an egg, chicken or whatever I fancy. You can use riced or mashed cauliflower as a base if you like. Breakfast - eggs, cheese, leftovers, yogurt ( full fat) with berries / seeds / nuts depending on how many carbs you are sticking to, almond pancakes with berries and cream ditto. Curry pastes have a few carbs per tbsp but, divided between you, they should be ok.

    - duck sounds good. I have never had it except in chinese pancakes as it is fatty but may give it a try.

    - I actually saw a mooli at a market when I was away. Is it like a radish in texture?

I got Gillian McKeiths "You are what you eat"" from a charity shop whilst away and there are some recipes that would be low carb, but a lot of fruit as well.

Back on the straight and narrow today and I will have 35 carbs, no flax, and weigh again on Monday

breakfast - yogurt, small piece cheddar cheese and cucumber
lunch - half avocado, tuna with mayo and salad
    snack - 20g 72% chocolate with 1 brazil nut and 10 walnuts
dinner - chicken with cheese and ham, broccoli, cauliflower
evening - almond pancake with raspberries and cream
6oz lactofree milk, 2 cups coffee, 1 tea

    Hi people!

Busy times chez Mercy this week :j

Well done Jerry! Jobs are like buses :rotfl: Hope you get the full time but if not you've plenty to be going on with :D You deserve a good time as you're so often positive in the face of negatives and do add inspiration to this place. :T

Welcome inspirespirit! Always good to have new low carbers as it makes us think more about what we do and why. Read, google and ask advice. There's a lot to take in but I think you've had good advice already. At first it will cost a little more but as you adjust and feel more confident you will find you eat less, naturally. Learn to listen to your body and do not be hungry again unless you choose to. Preparation is everything as having good snacks in makes not eating so many carbs much easier.

Are you also telling the people on the weightwatchers thread not to eat low fat as that is crammed with sugar?

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Thanks for that suggestion. I just asked someone who had posted a junk diet on the slimming world thread if they thought it contained the right nutrients for the body and got called a troll

Here's a little linky to Dr Briffa's blog.

Earlier in the week a 'nutritionalist' rubbished wheat / gluten intolerance on the increase and pushed bread like a dealer. :rotfl:

A very good comment after the article quotes from 'wheat belly' and explains why 'when we've been eating grains for ***years without issue, there are now problems with it.'

    Hi sheila!

Glad you had a good time! :j

Yep, mooli (daikon) are crisp and surprisingly light to munch. Not a hot radish but medium so you can eventually eat the whole thing. :rotfl:
Forgotten who but someone suggested as a replacement in delphiniose potatoes. Made it and it was v nice. About 3g carb / 100g so not bad at all :D

I've been using them in juicing lately and although you do get a slight radish afterheat/taste in my mixed juices it rather gets lost :)
