Jerry - so glad that today is better :) Not keen myself on anything with additives so prefer plain chicken with mayo or coleslaw and salad. Some of them also have added dextrose etc.

Thank you Sheila. I only ask, because they always seem to be on offer at my local Tesco Express. Might try one. Talking of Tesco, I'm going to go there tonight at 7.00 pm and see if I can find some protein on offer. I've also heard there is some sort of glitch on with lurpack butter (found this info on grabbit board). Might be too late though.
  • Aww, alias I'm sorry you've fallen off the wagon :( Really hope you manage to get back on. I'm experiencing the worst symptoms after stopping LCing - my ankle joints are so painful I can barely walk sometimes & you don't want to know about my gut problems :o

The soup sounds lovely, ideal comfort food for totm. Yes, peas & carrots are higher carb, but not disastrous (compared to icecream & cake :p) & soup does keep you fuller for longer so they say (don't know who 'they' are, lol). I've been craving thick pea & ham soup - think I'll have to buy or make some just to get it out of my system.

OH made a pot of pea and mint soup last night. It has peas (obviously :D) and carrots, celery and mint as far as I can remember.
Thoughts on whether I can eat or should avoid? I have no clue what it's carb content would be.

When it comes to carbs from veg I think it's a no-brainer, as long as you don't have half a loaf with it, and you are not in 'restriction' mode, then enjoy it.

I'll be making cream of butternut squash soup later, probably with some crumbled crispy smoked bacon on the top :D

JJJ, when you go to the shop have a look at the back of the packet and see how many carbs it shows, not per portion (as that is highly irrelevant) but per 100g. Really there shouldn't be any carbs, if there is, it has come from additives, and it is best left on the shelf.

This type of chicken is generally processed and like Sheila says, will contain dextrose, nitrates and other nasties. It is so easy to create your own with chicken breast chunks and a cajun/jerk (or similar) spice, either a dry rub, or by marinating with some olive oil and the spice mixed. Or a chilli oil? Or a lemon, garlic, thyme marinade?

(Being MSE, I should say it is much better to buy a whole chicken - the best you can afford - and cut it up, rather than buy separate bits.)

Sheila, re. herbs. When I do a chicken I put a mixed lot into the cavity with half a lemon and garlic cloves, when you are doing the gravy from the meat juices, pull it all out and let it all infuse into the mix, lovely.

Sage and lemon butter, over chicken, turkey, fish.

Herb flavoured butters for putting on top of steak/fish.

Herby yogurt or soured cream (poss. added cucumber - finely chopped cubes) to go with something spicy.

Thyme, oregano and rosemary go well in soups.

Chives in the cheese scones :)

Of course, lamb (if you can afford it ) is a classic marinated in rosemary, garlic and olive oil.

Herbs really give that depth of flavour that makes a dish, if you try something and think 'it's missing something' it's more than likely down to lack of seasoning which is a herb of some kind, not just S & P. (If you know all this, sorry :o)
  • Hi all,

Anyone else having trouble with the site? I keep getting "webpage cannot be displayed"
I've been trying to post this for ages - just to say, well done to Jerry with the cigs and the exercise, and bad luck to eletan and alias for not feeling well (and the car!)

Good luck to all who have done well too. I'd better see if this will go while I'm on a roll :D
  • Just want to say thanks for the thumbs up on recipe posting :)

I often coat a chicken with jalfrezi paste and leave it to marinate overnight before roasting - works well with pieces as well. (Do the same with Pesto :D)

Mmmm, I'm liking the sound of this, can I ask what jalfrezi paste you use, please??

Started eating more weds and another pound has dropped off :D

Eat enough of the good things. ;)

:T Well done on the lb off & the not smoking, you're doing so well!! Absolutely agree with the "eating enough of the good things".

Sounds scrumptious, can I ask how you make this, please?? I have a squash, double cream & unsmoked bacon in already.

I'm guilty of buying the fridge raiders for my DDs (only very occasionally & only when they're on offer), but this & daska's post have shown me how simple it would be to make my own, much healthier version, thank you both :)

SHEILA, I'm convinced my carb-fest has triggered the painful ankles again. When I was LCing I was fine, although I didn't actually realise this until I fell off the wagon & the pain returned with a vengeance. It was a case of not realising I was ok until I wasn't, iyswim??

Anyway, I'm slowly but surely getting back to the LC way of thinking. I've already bought a few LC items, just need to do a meal plan (been saying this for weeks :o), buy a few more things & away I go...

    Well I've had .....

a cheese omellette, 2 bowls of pea and mint soup and a bowl of ham and veg mush :D (consists of a diced gammon steak, mushrooms and grated cauli all kinda stir fried in together with a small amout of grated cheese chucked on top)...looks dodgy but tastes just fine. :rotfl:

I have no idea how many carbs all that would have been but I know it's a lot better than the last 3 days worth of eating crap. :o

    Now I want chocolate. :D

I use whatever I think looks nice in the shop sweet, I don't worry too much about the carb count because the actual amount used is such a small proportion - but I will admit that I avoid the cheap pastes, I just think they're not worth the saving, they tend be harsher in flavour and I want to enjoy my food.

The simplest way to replicate fridge raiders is to buy chicken pieces (whatever works out cheapest per lb) cut it into smaller pieces, mix with yoghourt and paste (marinade overnight if possible but don't worry about it I often cook them immediately and no-one complains), then bake at 180 for 20 minutes, pour off any excess liquid, and bake for another 10 minutes.
