    Morning all! :D

    Ok....so....got an embarrassing question......:o

My breath is none too sweet since I started low carbing again. It's every single day. In fact sometimes it's so bad I can smell it myself and that's saying something.

It's not even the ketosis / chemical kind of smell, it's worse. :o

How on earth do I sort this? It's becoming a real issue for me. :(

Nope, it smells of dog poo half the time. :o

    Yes, I'm a regular 'poo-er'. :D

Should also add I was at the dentist last week, all is well. I floss and brush regularly but that has no effect, I'm positive it's coming from my gut than my mouth.

    Gut Issues
Bad breath can stem from digestive issues. If your body reacts poorly to certain foods, eating them can cause bad breath. For most of the world, lactose-intolerance makes eating dairy a recipe for awful odor. Others react terribly to garlic or onions (more so than even poor madMUHHH), and there’s not much than can be done to avoid it.

Okay. Bad breath in some form or another is pretty much inevitable, even if you’re eating the right foods (sometimes because you’re eating the right foods!), but there are some pretty easy, natural ways to fight it.

    Flossing/Picking
Floss or pick your teeth. For extra authenticity, use a bone shard, a sharpened flint arrowhead, or a tendon from a rival tribesman.

    Brushing
If you want to avoid the artificial sweeteners and fluoride that make up most toothpastes, go with a natural brand. Most health food stores, or grocery shops like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods will have natural toothpastes. Or you could just brush with baking soda, though that might not clear up any particularly pungent food odors.

    Mint
Chew mint, or put a few drops of mint oil on your toothbrush and go to town. Mint smells great, plus it naturally cools your mouth. Be warned, though – the mint oil is intense stuff.

    Ginger
Reader E M suggests ginger. I love ginger, but had never tried it as a breath freshener. I can safely report that it does cut through bad breath – provided you like the smell of ginger in the first place (which I do).

    Citrus
Chewing on a lime or lemon wedge can freshen the breath in a pinch.

    Chlorophyll
For bad breath caused by gut issues, chlorophyll is said to help.

    Various Chewables
Try chewing parsley, fennel, or anise seeds to take care of superficial bad breath.

Never heard of this until now, thank you.

Think I'll give this a go.

  • I am not doing research for both educational purposes and potential business practices, just have a very rusty, outdated biochemisty degree from 30 years ago,

My reading of this experiment is demonstrates that if raw, unprocessed oats are eaten, 3.3% more starch remains unhydrolysed and available for fermentation by gut flora than when cooked processed oats are eaten.

This extra fermentable starch could provide a further quantity of fermentable substrate for the pathway which causes the proposed cholesterol lowering effect of oat fibre.

It proves that cooked grains are more completely digested by the time they reach the colon than uncooked grains, and eating raw oats will make you more windy than cooked oats.

This paper did study the effect of cooking on b glucan content:

    http://www.aaccnet.org/publications/cc/backissues/1991/Documents/68_372.pdf

Murphy – thanks for posting this:

“I personally think the However, I thought I'd look into oats/oat bran a bit more, and found that oats, uncooked, surprisingly, are classed as strongly inflammatory, 6g carbs per 10g - but 1g fibre, so 5g really - with masses of omega 6 compared to small amount of omega 3.

Cooking, - in water - changes everything, 1.2g carbs per 10g (.2g fibre per 10g included) and now hardly registering on the inflammatory scale. Omega 3 & 6 severely reduced. (Cooking with milk will obviously change the values.)”

Am I being silly or is the reduction in the carb content of the cooked oats merely due to the “dilution” effect of adding water eg 100g dry pasta contains 357 cals, 12g protein, 75g carbs and 100g cooked contains -did a quick search and the figures vary – probably with the sogginess of the pasta – approx. 190 cals, 41g carbs and 7 g protein?

Durham and Sistercas - warm CONGRATULATIONS to your talented daughters, that is such good news :-)

Hope everyone is geared up for a splendid weekend in the sun. I massively over ate on weds, same problem with getting over hungry after an hour of arerobics - the only good news was I overate cashew nuts and natural yoghurt which were at least slightly better than biscuits.

Got back on track again, I've started having flax seeds and natural yoghurt for breakfast which leaves me feeling really full. The only carbs I've had since weds are 50g dry weight of wholemeal pasta, the rest of my carbs have come from milk sugars and veg.

    Best wishes to all!
