Low-carb diets support thread

bossymoo - personally I think that we all need to understand that we have variations in the way that we follow a low carb diet. Dukan is low carb but the carbs are spread in a different way from say Atkins. It is also low fat, which Atkins is not. However it is still a low carb diet that may people have found to make them lose weight and feel healthier. If you are diabetic, which thankfully I am not, then a lower carb approach is suggested and usually followed.
I think that Mercy is right and that, if we know where we are coming from, we can still support and encourage each other. Added to this is the fact that some people are also struggling with personal problems and it helps to talk and feel heard. I can't see that as a problem either as it is what makes us human beings.0 -
Criticising me for donating clothes to charity is just out of order. Has nothing to do with low carb whatsoever.
I can't find a post that criticises for donating to hospice shops. It may have been edited out though. I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with this sort of thing.
Your posts have been very informative and useful to many people. The spirit of the recent posts seems to be live and let live and for us all to be aware that low carb comes in many shapes and sizes. Maybe if we let each other know our level, we can help them help us and help others more successfully.
I will add a note to my oat type posts tho to avoid confusion for newbies.
I also do high intensity workouts 4 or 5 times a week so I burn off the low GI carbs doing that. I prob should have explained myself a bit better, sorry.
Thanks, I'm sure it'll help avoid confusion

Hi all
Reading over the last 24hrs of posts, quite a few folk say they have been scared to post / wary of reactions.
I hope I've not been the cause of that. Up until 'oat-gate' I haven't criticised anyone's food I don't think. I mostly stick to answering questions specifically asked and just chillin on here. :rotfl:
Do put me right if I'm wrong tho

I don't think I have either; with the notable exception of soya which I believe to be inherently evil! (Anyone using the bathroom after me would probably agree with that sentiment LOL, sorry if TMI)Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Surely the point is that everyone is entitled to their opinion, isn't it what makes life interesting? daska & Mercy - you are saying how you feel about certain food products and it may make others think about the way that they eat. Nothing wrong with that. I have my own opinions and don't eat soy, gluten or some other products. My thoughts are up to me but if it is backed by research then it is worth pointing it out and leave others to make their own decisions. However if others want or can eat them that's fine.
Am I preaching again? I hate conflict and just want to get back to where we were before all of this blew up. Life is too short ......
Hugs and love to everyone and no I haven't been on the wacky backy!!!0 -
Just thought I'd pop in to say 'hi' to everyone. I joined this group to get info about LCing for my daughter who suffers with inflammation/chronic pain. I've since discovered the joys of eating no sugar and grains, and am really feeling the benefits (although with 6 lbs to go to reach my target, weightloss is definitely slow going!)
My daughter (as well as LCing)takes a large dose of omega 3 oil a day as well as vit D, and is I think beginning to feel the benefits in terms of pain reduction-minimally, I think, but nevertheless, a reduction. Also her excema has gone(thinking that's the fish oils??) which is a wonderful extra!!
My husband is now on board, and the other 3 children are eating less carbs than before.
I love eating like this and will carry on avoiding grains, rice, sugar long term- but will eat them if friends are doing the cooking or it can't be avoided.0 -
Oh dear i'm away for a day
It's difficult on this thread as low carb does vary a bit. My dad does Atkins so aims for less than 20g of carbs whereas i follow Primal/Paleo and aim for 40-70g of carbs. I think it's a very good idea to put a little note in our signatures to indicate what you are doing and i'll add one in a minute! I know as a relative newbie i have found it a bit confusing when higher carb foods are mentioned so the signatures would help.
I hope the disagreement in here blows over as it's a lovely supportive thread xx
I'm not sure why anyone would have a problem with you donating clothes, Edwardia!I donate clothes when they are nice enough to give away and I also buy some things in charity shops.
For info:
I follow Primal/Paleo but my main objective was to get as many additives out of my food and drink as possible for health reasons. My meals focus on a piece of meat and a big pile of veggiesDuck legs being my favourite closely followed by roast chicken quarters basted so the skin is nice and crispy! I have 1 or 2 servings of fruit a day but have to be careful not to eat too much at once or i get a sugar spike. I only drink water now
I've lost 21lb in 8 weeks. Considering it took me a year to lose 9lb on WW i am over the moon. I've bought some new work clothes in a smaller size (started a new job and hardly had anything suitable left from my last job!) and have just bought a work skirt for the first time in 4 years
Hope everyone has had a good day? I'm pretty exhaustedx

I don't want to add to the arguments that seem to be raging but one thing I have learnt from reading this thread is that life seems so much easier if you are lucky enough to be an omnivore with no food tolerance issues.

I haven't worked out the carb counts but the ideas are sound
Gloomendoom - you have done well. I also am having more of a problem to lose although I still have a bit to go. Maybe our bodies adjust and, when we get nearer to goal, just hang on to it. However, as most people know, I have lost 6 stone 6 lb and have no intention of putting it back again. I managed to put on 2lb on holiday by being quite good but with an ice cream each day and one small bowl of pasta. Lost it the next week and then a bit more so don't worry
Not low carb or veggie, as flour used and chicken stock. Eugh!
Cream of Mushroom Soup, simple food.
Slowly cook roughly chopped onion and mushrooms in butter add oxo veg cube, not Knorr as it's overpowering. Add water, salt and pepper to taste and liquidise. I keep back some cooked mushrooms for texture.
Stir in cream and add cheese or other protein. Done!
This is the method for every veg soup.0
