I also am very lucky enough to have a thermomix but I'll be honest I have'nt used it quite so much lately and will be looking forward to getting to grips with it again.
just had a google at what thermomix is ... i still dont fully understand it ... what does it do etc? is it worth that amount of money ? do you use it often ?
it does look kinda interesting though i have to admit0 -
I am not the person who came up with low carb, nor am I the person who stated that eating lower carb sweet stuff with little nutritional value doesn't break the carb habit. Nor am I the person who came up with the idea that going back to the standard Western diet after losing weight will cause weight gain. There's research out there to back those things,
It's not rocket science that eating potatoes, toast, rice cakes, oats, muesli, porridge, pancakes, Bakewell tarts, Cadbury's buttons, stevia and so forth will stall weight loss but people on here blame stalls on cauliflower and cheese and start reverting to calorie counting instead of upping the fat content of their diet and cutting down the carbs.
No one called me smug for doing my first order at Approved Foods or Spices of India. The person calling me smug for doing my first order at Abel & Cole has a 5000 sq ft house in the country as well and says she used to earn thousands.. hardly my fault she lost it all.
I've already explained that I have diabetes and my OH has PTSD, I don't need to offer up the minutiae of my life for inspection on a public forum. Suffice it to say we were poor, OH worked hard so we aren't any more.
That doesn't mean we're rich and we still shop at Lidl as well as Waitrose. Anyone who looked at my blog would see I list all the low carb offers at ASDA, Budgens, Co-op, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and Waitrose..maybe you think I list them but don't buy any ?
Criticising me for donating clothes to charity is just out of order. Has nothing to do with low carb whatsoever.
OH says I'm better off out of here and I agree.0 -

Edwardia you are deliberately twisting what I said and that is really unfair and I feel rather upset about it.
I didn't blame my previous stall on cauliflower cheese, I was eating very carefully and still didn't lose, hey ho, it happens to the best of us and while I didn't lose lbs I still lost inches so it would appear that I was converting. I clearly stated that I left out the sugar from the original recipe yet you still had a pop, twice, at the fact that I accidentally still listed it among the ingredients when trying to convert it from a recipe that only Triker and I could hope to follow. I ended up having a splurge last night because I had the most enormous carb craving which, logically, having experienced it several times now, I can only blame on the cauli cheese. FYI I lost another half pound and updated my sig to that effect. So rein it in a bit please
And please don't leave, we'd miss you.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Edwardia, i still lurk and certainly wouldn't want you to leave, you have contributed loads to the thread, you do your research and pass on what you have discovered which is great, it's just that for some people, having a low carb alternative to a high carb favourite is better than having something high carb and setting them back, we dont all want or need to cut carbs to 20g per day.
There is room for 'toast' on a lc diet depending on the carbs per slice, someone from earlier on in the thread found seeded bread at 6g per slice, so a slice a day is quite acceptable for some, as mercy said.. as long as we indicate the carbs in our sig.
That is the reason i was here, to find lc foods and recipes (and info) that i could enjoy (my lasagne is amazing)
You have more incentive to be strict than some.
I now have more incentive to lose weight because of my knees and am having success on an alternative diet but still lurk because i like everyone on here and want to know how they are getting on (general life as well as the diet) but have been reluctant to post because i know i'd get complaints.
Please stay, maybe we have cleared the air now and can continue. XX0 -
Hi kafkathecat, I am looking forward to sharing vege and vegan recipes with you! I know a lot of people disapprove of soya but I eat a medium amount of it, tried the soya powder but just didn't like it in shakes etc, so I use soya milk instead. Because I no longer have lots to lose I eat a small amount of beans and (SHOCK HORROR) even some oats.
I have made bean and oat burgers before, just mixing mashed up beans with fried onions or garlic, binding with an egg and bulking up with a bit of oat. Not ideal for very purist low carbers but if you are on a maintenance it is great. Not sure what you could use as a substitute for egg as it binds so well.
This thread has a lot of interesting info and I am looking forward to reading through all the pages, a bit at a time of course! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
What always worked for me and the advice I give if asked, is to try and keep each meal/snack below about 9 or 10 carbs in total. That way you're not triggering an insulin response but slipping under the radar as it were. However, some can get away with a higher amount of carbs and still lose. Then again, some can lose weight successfully on WW or Rosemary Conley, I struggled, as the carbs were just too high. Took me a year to lose 21lbs on WW. Switched to low-carb and lost 35lbs in 4 months.
I am back on it from today and have been perusing Linda's lowcarb recipes again for inspiration. My main 'throw the towel in' issues are lack of scrunchy foods like toast, crisps and biscuits and being bothered to cook something decent for myself during the week - work full-time and have 3 children still at home, who eat at different times and one is vegetarian, so by the time I've sorted them out, I'm lacking in enthusiasm to make anything for myself. Also I tell the OH he's one of these feeders cos he will insist on bringing me home things like fresh croissants or bags of sweets
Today's food:
B - 2 eggs scrambled in butter
L - Ham and salad
D - chicken in leek and mushroom cream sauce with broccoli
2 black coffees, 1 tea and 2 litres waterOver futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0 -
Well, me and Mrs G have been low carbing for six months now. You may be interested in the comparison.
I've lost 2st 5lb and Mrs G has lost just 6lbs.
We eat the same food and Mrs G is, if anything, stricter than me as she doesn't drink beer or chocolate (85%.) She also does more exercise. However, there are differences. Mrs G wasn't "overweight" when we started, just heavier (fatter) than she wanted to be. I, on the other hand, was officially overweight.
I have now dropped to being just a half stone heavier than I want to be and progress has slowed to a snail's pace.
From this I have concluded that low carbing is a very effective way to lose weight if you are a fatty but not so good if you are just trying to get trim for vanity's sake.
The low carb thing was an experiment, we signed up for six months to see how it went. Both of us intend to carry on with the low carb lifestyle... although we are off on holiday soon and I suspect I may temporarily fall off the wagon at some point.0 -

I haven't worked out the carb counts but the ideas are sound
Gloomendoom - you have done well. I also am having more of a problem to lose although I still have a bit to go. Maybe our bodies adjust and, when we get nearer to goal, just hang on to it. However, as most people know, I have lost 6 stone 6 lb and have no intention of putting it back again. I managed to put on 2lb on holiday by being quite good but with an ice cream each day and one small bowl of pasta. Lost it the next week and then a bit more so don't worry0 -

Can't you just ignore it? We can't all get on with everybody all the time, people get on your nerves, that's normal.
Looking from a couple of points of view, I can see that people (no fingers pointing here) might think you are spending a lot of money on food - which is completely your prerogative, by the way, it's your money - and feel resentful if they haven't got that much to spend. Like I said, any little digs - however light-hearted - get misinterpreted and it all gets out of hand.
You are a worthy contributor to this thread, don't give up if you feel strongly enough about this subject.
As for the low-carb alternative discussion. Yes, I have advocated the low carb muffins with a recipe, and asked for other alternatives (the custard tart alternative was yukky), I can see Edwardias point of view that it doesn't break the cycle/habit; I'm quite disciplined (she says with a pork pie in the fridge
) and class these type things as treats, but other people may not.
All the advice on here has to be general, none of us know each other (although I stand to be corrected), and how individuals respond to that advice (like Sheila eating all the muffins, not just one!) is their responsibility.
