Thanks for all the personal remarks, I will just point out that I didn't make any and will leave you to your Bakewell tarts.

Yes, I had wealthy parents, but I fell in love with a blue collar worker and certainly have eaten my share of Tesco value burgers which the dog turned his nose up at. OH worked like a dog himself, doing overtime to go to college part time in order to get into management.

Waitrose = free delivery, minimum order £50 and I use Waitrose to stock the freezer with offers. Abel & Cole delivery 99p, minimum order £10... Abel & Cole organic mature Cheddar 360g 3.99 (special offer 3.59 atm), Cathedral City 350g 4.38 Tesco..just one example.

OH has a Jermyn St pure new wool suit worth £500 but I got it for 199.20 in a sale with free suit bag, trouser hemming and a £40 Virgin Wines voucher. It cost less than a Marks and Spencer one.

I've learned that no matter how poor I thought we were, there's always someone worse off than me and I never thought I'd get criticised for giving clothes to my local hospice shop.

Or told that I'm a control freak for pointing out that lots of people on here eat things that aren't advocated by any low carb book.

You are a mastermind at turning it all around. If you don't approve - that's it then. You say you understand but all your other words say you don't care if it's not your way. :( You don't make 'personal remarks' but you see them about you everywhere. :) If you are misunderstood, maybe you should think about how you put yourself across? ;)

Mercy sorry am on mobile phone ( back on nights :( ) so please forgive spelling etc

Ginger is what coke/ diet coke etc is currently referred to in Scotland ... I think it's something to do with us mainly drinking irn bru ( which is ginger in colour)

I think 100g would be too much for me as well tbh ... But i know of people that eat 4/5 times that per day so for them 100 would be classed as low carb ...

I'm nights just now so am considering upping my carbs to 50g per day whilst i am on ... Would ideally like to get to 25/30g per day but i think that will take me a wee while to learn how to get there

Like you Padstow I don't have a lot of money to spend on food. My OH had to take a salary reduction in April, which I don't mind because he was originally faced with losing his job altogether. Also I still have children at home so I am not just buying for myself. Whilst I have chosen to low carb I cannot impose it on the rest of the family. I would/do feel guilty at buy the best bits of meat/fish etc for myself whilst the family have cheaper stuff, it is their choice but I still feel uncomfortable and selfish. Since I started low carbing sticking to budget has been difficult. I have always sought out bargains but it is still a struggle. I was brought up in a family of four by a single parent on benefits. There were times when we didn't have food in the house . This experience has taught me to use money wisely and be frugal whenever I can. To make matters harder, I have Chronic Lyme Disease, which leaves me with limited energy. I cannot keep popping out to shops whenever I hear there is an offer on as I don't have enough energy for this. Also low carb food takes more preparation, more preparation = more energy used, more prep means more washing up and so it goes on. Not only do I have to manage money, I have to manage my energy too. There are times when I just cannot prepare a meal hence the reason I have been having oatcakes & cheese. I am now trying to avoid these but I know there will be times when that is all I can manage.

I appreciate all the information, chat & support on this thread I am learning so much. I have however, been discouraged by some comments and so do not post has often. I have put my food for today in with this post but inwardly I am expecting an onslaught because it is not low carb enough. Quite often what is meant as support comes across as criticism and it would be a shame if people are put off low carbing/this thread altogether.

Don't give up on it yet. They say it may take a few goes before you can resuscitate it when it's been dormant for a while. Change its sugar water everyday for a few and see if that helps.

Sing to it and greet it with a hearty 'good morning my lovelies' too. Well, you never know :D

Thank you Padstow. I have been loosely following the Idiot Proof Diet and a bit of Rose Elliott vegetarian low carb. Now I am about 10 Kg, or 1 and a half stone from the most ideal (but happy where I am, too) weight I am on a phase 2, so I eat more carbs, not counting the grams but just being moderate. Still losing very slowly but no hunger. I allow myself a rare small porridge but eat pulses perhaps twice a week. No wheat bread but very occasional tiny amount of rye bread. I eat eggs and have to force myself to eat fish, as it is not a favourite food. Cheese, I love it but it dos not love me back as I have a slight dairy intolerance. Yogurt ok, though, no bloating and no stalling. Used to eat Greek yogurt all the time but now I make my own. Even tried to eat small amounts of meat but I feel really bad when I do, physically as well as ethically. Tons of veg, except for carrots and sweet corn. No potatoes. Small amount of wine occasionally, no beer. Very rare vodka lime and soda.

This way I have been eating fairly low carb but without undue sacrifices. I would not want to judge others on their number of carb grams and I do not wish to be judged either, so if someone does disapprove of my way of eating, tough, really!

I hope to pick up new ideas here and correspond peacefully with fellow low- and mid- carbers!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Hi Padstow and Caterina, I eat a low carb almost entirely vegan diet. I eat lots of things that many on here don't approve of, lots of soya and wheat gluten. It works for me. It also allows me to create enough variety and share meals with my family. Some of my cheaper meals are: stir fries with peanut butter sauce, home made nut roast made from peanuts and grated vegetables, vegeburgers and coleslaw and soya mince shepherds pie(cauliflower mash).
I also use soya protein powder which although expensive works out as a relatively cheap way to increase protein. If I am hungry I add some to milk and cocoa powder, It is so filling I have had that for lunch.
I am amazed how little food some people here manage on and appreciate all the tips and advice even though much of it I can't use as a veggie.

This bickering is all nonsense and unproductive. We all have our bad days and have to make allowances if this thread is to be useful. We are also entitled to our opinions but need to be aware that those new to a low carb diet are looking for encouragement and support. Lecture over :o

Mercy, Edwardia, murphydog999, Skymist etc are all very knowledgeable and well researched on the subject. I have also found them to be nice people ;)

Padstow - you have to eat. Can you eek out store cupboard items with extras? Tinned sardines, mackeral and tuna can be cheap as well as cheese if you look around and a little can go a long way. Just be inventive and if you run out of ideas then put what you have on here and we can have fun making up suggestions for you.
If you have lentils then can you make a curry with any tinned / frozen veg?

    Hugs to you xx
