:staradmin Gold star for Gray Malkin as you're nice to your MIL ! :T for resisting.
Made a dish for dinner, from the Traditional Farmhouse cookery book - basically it's layered onion, marrow, tomatoes with cheese on top and shavings of butter dotted amongst the layers. Very simple.0 -
Evening, I was naughty today and had a packet of crisps which is sort of
because they did taste good and
because now I wany more and it is not exactly low carb!! Apart from that I guess you could say low carb all the way!

Crisps are moreish, especially Kettle Chips but while one small packet isn't too much of a transgression, starting to sneak them regularly would completely derail your diet unfortunately.
Wonder whether it would help if we actually described our Achilles heel foods ie why we like them and how they make us feel and then maybe we could offer each other some suggestions for low carb substitutes ?
My Achilles heels were Kettle Chips but last time I ate a bag I was physically sick. I'm munching pistachios (7.6g carbs for 47) but just ain't the same. I loved the salty crunchiness, the way they start off crisp in your mouth and just melt and release all that salty potato-ness. Crisps were an essential packed lunch treat for school outings. When I was about 8 the only thing in life better than prawn cocktail crisps were prawns.
So what about you ?0 -
Edwardia - I like cake, marmite on toast and also crisps when i feel like it. I have to say that I would sometimes alternate cake and crisps before I started the low carb way as then I got the taste of both
I have had one quarter of a piece of marmite on toast in the last year, made the odd small low carb muffin and then had more than one and probably had 6 - 7 crisps in that time. When I had a half a piece of chocolate birthday cake I had terrible stomach cramps and regretted it that evening so it is a good deterrent!!

I just related my chocolate cake victory to my neighbour, and she told me I was being ridiculous
What does a bit of cake matter, it's not as though you've got an allergy!
She has "food intolerances". Yeeeess
Edwardia, my weakness is for good bread. I've made many low carb versions but they're pretty poor substitutes. I went through a phase of wasting tons of flax seed meal, almond flour and wheat gluten before I gave up the fight! I make a pretty mean flax seed cracker which is good for pate and stuff, but I miss a nice soft slice of bread sometimes.0 -
For me it's chocolate. My idea of heaven is a hot cup of tea, and a bag of giant chocolate buttons. At the same time. So the tea melts a button in your mouth mmmm...
I'm not a huge fan of dark chocolate, so my sneaks at the moment are diabetic milk choc from boots. I know it's all sweeteners, but for the amount I eat, well it keeps me on the straight and narrow mostly.
I find you can substitute for most things, but yes, crisps are a tricky one. Which reminds me: wafer thin ham, lay on a grill rack, and grill under a low heat until dried out. Goes crisp, actually quite nice. But, not a tube of Pringles by any stretch of the imagination...
Turkey rashers and eggs for breakfast
Mixed grill with Philly peppercorn "sauce" for dinner
Oopsies with Philly and pastrami for supper
Onken natural yoghurt with sf jelly crystals sprinkled on for snack
Banana milkshake (not a real one of course)
The rain has arrived.Bossymoo

no, it's not ridiculousa lick of the spoon turns into licking the bowl, turns into a slice of cake turns into 2...for me i have to stay in control otherwise things escalate.
My weakness is sweet things, they play havoc with my blood sugars sending crazy hungry signals to my brain. I can't have anything other than a bit of fruit (once or twice a day, and definitely not as a meal substitute) or i'll turn into that crazy sugar lady againNow i'm not eating sugary things my hunger signals are 'normal', it's a revelation!

I agree with this. Earlier this year a well-meaning friend invited me to dinner and gave me a slice of apple pie with honeycomb clotted cream ice cream. I gave most of it to my OH, but the bit I ate gave me a "hangover" the next day, and left me craving carbs for a week
I'm not a huge fan of crisps, but has anyone tried spinach crisps? They are very tasty and very easy to make. Just lay baby spinach leaves on a baking tray and season with a bit of sea salt, and dry in a low oven until crisp and dry. Melt in the mouth and slightly crunchy0 -

Don't mention cake!
We went to a wedding a couple of weekends ago as evening guests. We assumed that there would be some sort of buffet provided for evening guests and that there was bound to be something low carb that we could eat.
Wrong! Apart from wedding cake, there was no food at all. Having driven 150 miles to get there, I was well miffed, and starving hungry too.
I ended up eating the wedding cake (not all of it.) Horrible sickly sticky sweet carb rich wedding cake at that. It's taken me two weeks to start shedding weight again.0 -
I have just deleted my list, there was far too much on it and how do they make me feel, wanting more is the short answer to the point that I have to finish the packet etc regardless of whether I have just eaten a meal or not. For me it boils down to either habit, boredom, over busy(and by eating it 'allows' me to stop) or tiredness(in a bid to get some energy) and sometimes just for the sheer hell of it cause I want to and it tastes good0
