I've been naughty this week and succumbed to a small bag of Walkers salt and vinegar. I love Walkers crisps, having been bought up in the midlands and being a publicans daughter! No chance at all to get away from them - not that I wanted to at the time!!

I had them with a mackerel salad and enjoyed them, and for me that's it now, I've had that bit of pleasure and can move on.

Don't get me onto biscuits though, I am/was a real biscuit fiend - it's that tea-and-biscuit association as well, that's been hard to break. It's the crunch and texture for me; cold, thick sliced toast and marmalade, a chocy digestive, nice crunchy crisp - thats is unfortunately the joy of carbs for me, that nothing else can replace.

However, I can see the difference not eating the stuff, and that's enough motivation for me. Some people have said to me, 'you only live once, eat what you like', and in some respect they might have a point; but if there is one thing society is losing it is respect and personal responsibility, and this attitude sums it up for me.

Sorry, I'm on my soap-box now, but having been in the fitness industry for 20 years this year, it's a subject that I have strong opinions on. The mass-market fitness industry, mass-market food companies, and mass-market diet companies, do not give two-hoots about the consumer, it's all about profit at any cost, and it makes you wonder if they all have shares in the mass-market drug companies, as that's where they are all taking us.

I agree with this. Earlier this year a well-meaning friend invited me to dinner and gave me a slice of apple pie with honeycomb clotted cream ice cream. I gave most of it to my OH, but the bit I ate gave me a "hangover" the next day, and left me craving carbs for a week :(

I'm not a huge fan of crisps, but has anyone tried spinach crisps? They are very tasty and very easy to make. Just lay baby spinach leaves on a baking tray and season with a bit of sea salt, and dry in a low oven until crisp and dry. Melt in the mouth and slightly crunchy

It's strange how sugar has that hold over some people! My MIL is like this but she won't admit it...misses meals and then binges on mars bars instead. I've lent her my paleo books to read but even after reading them she does the same thing.

Ooh loving the sound of spinach crisps.... :T
    Don't mention cake!

We went to a wedding a couple of weekends ago as evening guests. We assumed that there would be some sort of buffet provided for evening guests and that there was bound to be something low carb that we could eat.

Wrong! Apart from wedding cake, there was no food at all. Having driven 150 miles to get there, I was well miffed, and starving hungry too.

I ended up eating the wedding cake (not all of it.) Horrible sickly sticky sweet carb rich wedding cake at that. It's taken me two weeks to start shedding weight again. :(

eek!!! You must have been so hungry  I'm going to my sisters to babysit next week and am planning on taking some pre-cooked bacon and chicken just in case i can't eat what's in her house :o

murphydog999 - please get on your soapbox more often :T
ONE plain digestive isn't that many carbs, they're the least carby biscuits IIRC -the Daily Record, a Scottish newspaper, did a nutritional analysis. It depends whether you can stop at one if you have them in the house. I guess.

Gray Malkin - if the flaxseed crackers are nice n crunchy maybe that would give lovers of Marmite, guacamole, houmous, egg mayo sandwich filler, cheese and onion sandwich filler and pate (excuse lack of accents) something to spread them on. :D

My MIL has diabetes too and she ignores it and stuffs whatever she wants and as a consequence is hugely fat and has heart disease. She's very stubborn and I think her GP must have given up. I never buy her Bailey's or chocolate though like her daughters.

devildog - carbs are a catch22 - they are comfort food and give us pleasure and then our blood sugar crashes and so do we, needing more food.

devildog - I understand as it is harder when you are tired. I used to always eat more when tired or ill in the vain belief that it would give me energy to get through the day. Usually up between 4 and 5 now but have a few spoons of yogurt sprinkled with sesame seeds and flax to get me through.

Gloomendoom - I had a similar experience on Saturday at 60th birthday party. Canapes served at 8 which were a dead loss as on bread or similar and the barbecue was due at midnight and I had to leave :( I also am having problems with alcohol giving me gripes so ended up with tap water.

Have a good day everyone :)

Sorry to hear that :( Hope you are OK

I had a broken night too - had to take one of the cats to the vet at midnight to have a long piece of reed grass removed from her throat (second time in 12 months). Just waiting for the call to pick her up now. Will she never learn? Nope.

Am girding my loins for MIL's tea party this afternoon. I will resist, I will resist.....

Better go put some eggs on to boil.
