Well if you had a Quattro Formaggio cheese pizza and just didn't eat the base, that would be better than eating the whole thing but not good.

At McD's the grilled chicken and grilled chicken and bacon salads (not the crispy versions) and carrot sticks are all 6g/portion. The garden side salad is 2g/portion, the fruit bag is 10g/portion. Black coffee, esperesso, Coke Zero, Diet Coke and Sprite Z are 0g/portion, tea with milk is 1g/portion.

Best thing to do is to decide why you're reaching for crumpets etc and if no-one else cooks, I'd suggest cooking more low carb stuff and they will be so busy tucking into steak and salad, ricotta-stuffed trout, strawberries and cream etc they won't notice. If you are buying for them and they aren't supportive of your diet then it doesn't really help you.

Well done on the housework !

I'm not trying to control the calories, just the carbs, but they do add up even when you're eating mainly mounds of green veg LOL. I've just worked out that I probably had a pound of broccoli last night, that's at least 20g carbs in itself. By the time I've added up the romaine, pate, cocoa, cacao nibs, yoghourt, cheese, cream, nuts and berries etc the carb level is getting a little high. And I'm still waiting for my insides to subside completely so that might be a factor, and coming off the meds and going back on (got the hospital appt through) might also have had an affect. Anyway, I'm off to hard boil some eggs and make some mayo. And I'm going to go back to recording what I eat so I can't pretend I didn't have a snack earlier...

Does anyone have any tips for LC-ing that is not so expensive?
My budget has gone up a fair bit, as we are eating loads of eggs, cheese, meat and fish. Also berries and nuts are pricey too.
I love eating like this, and look out for reduced fish (in Waitrose) etc, but we used to eat so much pasta/rice etc that is so much cheaper.
I don't like using artificial stuff, so stay away from sweeteners etc.
Is this just one of the drawbacks of eating this way?

marbett - I buy veg, ground almonds, nuts, free range eggs from Lidl or Aldi as they are cheaper. Pate, bacon and other meat products can be cheaper as well. Otherwise check on mysupermarket for store offers and stock up.

Phoned for blood results and GP not in today :( I have to speak to her on Monday about fasting lipids and thyroid function. Would like to know about the lipids ( cholesterol ) as I have not had problems before! Why am I not surprised and yet I was hoping that they would be ok. Thyroid has been suspicious since beginning of year and may explain why I am tired and not losing weight. If any of you are over 45 or type 1 diabetic, tired and stalling then maybe you should get your thyroid checked as well as underactive thyroid is not uncommon.

daska - cheer up, it will work. Maybe counting would be a good idea, although tiresome.

sistercas - See if you can get your vitamins and minerals from food as much as possible as it is better for you. That, as well as counting carbs, is why I use fitday

bossymoo - well done for resisting

Edwardia - glad to see you posting. How are you today? :)

mazzers - I hope things pick up soon.

Unfortunately yes, it is more expensive to buy protein sources, but remember you don't actually need a huge amount. I've seen recommendations for:

    a. working it out based on your body weight (1.5-2g per kilo)

    b. set guidelines by age
Recommended Dietary Allowance for Protein Grams of protein needed each day
    Children ages 1 – 3 13
    Children ages 4 – 8 19
    Children ages 9 – 13 34
    Girls ages 14 – 18 46
    Boys ages 14 – 18 52
    Women ages 19 – 70+ 46
    Men ages 19 – 70+ 56

    (the body doesn't store protein)

marbett - I think it depends on the size of your family and how many people are eating low carb. There's just husband et moi and while he doesn't go as low carb as me, he's certainly eating fewer carbs. We hardly buy processed food now, eat more veg (organic whenever we can find it), go to Lidl for veg first and now stash special offers on meat, poultry, fish and game from Waitrose and Sainsbury's in the freezer. Grow our own herbs and salad in summer too.

sheila54 - fine thanks, how are you ? You seem a bit down. (((sheila54))). On the blood test forms which I get, blood lipids are listed separately from cholesterol so are you sure it's cholesterol ? Two out of three of my bro's daughters have thyroid probs one isn't even 18 yet. Could exactly be why you're stalling. A bummer, but best to get it sorted. xx

sistercas - while sheila54 is right that it's best to get nutrients direct from source, if you aren't eating right then you won't get them so while we should all eat properly that's not always possible, in which case multivitamins are like insurance. Robert Atkins always believed in supplements, I remember.

Off to be pincushioned by a phlebotomist yet again, then to Morrisons maybe for some duck legs :)

Edwardia what do you do with your duck legs, how do you cook them I suppose. I keep threatening to try duck legs but I would just cook them like chicken legs, is there a better way ?

    Thanks xx

Hi Marrbett, I have found the same. As a veggie most of my meals were beans and grains.
Peanut butter and soya mince are quite cheap and you can make a lovely sauce for stir fries from peanut butter.
Also, if you are planning on doing this long term go blackberrying in the summer and freeze them. I have been blending frozen blackberries with ground almonds for an almost sweet treat.
On the positive side I am eating so much less food that that must be saving me some money at least.
