glad you're sticking around Edwardia :A
It's funny you should mention hidden sugar!! I went to Asda to check out the smoked salmon earlier (i was thinking of having some with egg for breakfast) and discovered this has sugar in it! So i left without salmon....how bad is that?? You've got to check everything!! Arrgh just seen that pork chops are on your list....i've been eating them this week, best go and check the packet  xx0 -
Thanks confused76 xx I have been using ASDA Smartprice smoked salmon trimmings for omelettes and I'll be checking those eek thanks for the tip !
I have emailed Tesco and told them how appalled I am by 89% pork, pork loin steaks with dried glucose syrup, so I'll let you know what they say.
The Tesco pork loin steaks 660g are part of a buy 2 for £7 or £3 for £10 offer to the 15th May. Waitrose has essential Waitrose British pork thin cut loin steaks 450g 3 for £10 to 6th June. I called Waitrose and waited while the customer service agent checked their database. All their pork, including that in pies and ready meals, comes straight from British farms and the fresh cuts of meat are 100% pork and don't have any additives. She told me that if there isn't enough info on the website on any product I can always call up and ask about it.
Checked with Sainsbury's and they have Sainsbury's boneless pork loin steaks 630g 3 for £10 to 29 Jan 2013, 100% pork no additives.
ASDA customer services really helpful, even called the buyer for me. ASDA pork loin steaks 660g 3.80 or 3 for £10 100% pork no additives.0 -
(((edwardia)))
Well I didn't do too bad with the Chinese last night. Spare ribs, foo young, prawns in black bean and chicken and veg. Not all to myself of course. No rice, did have a piece of prawn toast though. And no pudding.
Had oatbran porridge this morning with a touch of skimmed milk and stevia, and some vanilla extract. Fish for lunch, either haddock or salmon, and not sure about dinner yet. Might just have a snack with the tots and do an omelette for supper.
Weight stayed same today a good sign after takeaway...

I expect premium smoked salmon not to be adulterated with sugar - since when does smoked salmon need sugar ?? As for pork loin steaks which are only 89% pork and have dried glucose syrip on them, again the question is why ??
I'm not impressed with the amount of water added to bacons and the sugars that are found once you read the labels.
Probably mentioned already but;
Tesco soft and creamy soft cheese (full fat) has 2.4g carbs per 100g which is less i think than Philadelphia.
McLelland Seriously strong Spreadable cheese 1.5g carb per 100g - this cheese can be microwaved to make a sauce. (this does have skimmed milk powder listed as an ingredient).
Asda have a three pack bratwurst sausage which has 0.2g carbs per sausage.0 -
Gia Sun dried Tomato Puree (with oil, herbs and spices) less than 0.5g carbs per 100g.0

Edwardia, I am pleased you have decided to stay with us - this is your virtual home!!:T
Am off in the morning for a weekend away in Tallinn. I have no idea how I'll manage with the food - I think it is all dumplings ..... wish me luck.
Have a good weekend all and I'll catch up on Monday.:D0 -
Thanks for the tips bedsdriver, I'm unimpressed with salty and nitrates in bacon either and don't eat it anymore.
bossymoo I think Chinese food is all pretty carby either from rice or the amount of sugar in stuff so you did well considering !
Minihauk thanks I'm all embarrassed now. Good luck in Estonia, that sounds tough. I was curious and looked the food up.. I hope you like fish otherwise yep it's carby stuff !!
EDIT: Tesco called me and are passing my complaint forward. The customer service agent didn't really have much he could say because his screen told him that the pork loin chops had added water for succulence as well.. so I told him that as an ex-chef I know that's untrue (it's just to make up weight) and that piece of info wasn't on the website either !
I told him that while I expected sausages, bacon and burgers ie processed stuff to contain chemicals (why I don't eat them) I don't expect them in fresh meat. I feel it's more or less cheating.
I told him it makes me wary of buying other stuff from Tesco, I'd sought out other pork loin steaks on supermarket websites and called them to find no, ASDA, Sainsbury's and Waitrose don't add water or additives to their pork.
ASDA even has the same offer ie 3 packs of 660g pork loin steaks for £10. I want to know why Tesco feels the need to do this because if ASDA can do 3 packs for £10 without adding 11% water, sodium acetate and dried glucose syrup then Tesco should be able to, surely ?
OH nips round local Tesco frequently and after the whole pricing controversy and the no value everyday value well I feel like telling him that we'll use the local Co-op or the big Sainsbury's a mile away.
Tesco is really hypocritical with the eat your five a day and plenty of meat, fish and poultry blah blah but meanwhile they're sneaking in added water, sugar and preservatives.0 -
Oatcakes - I really wasn't that bad, I had 4. And I put on 4lb! I don't for one minute believe I actually put on 4lb fat, I felt extremely bloated and windy though and got belly cramps so either they were contaminated with wheat (not unusual) or I have a problem with oats as well, or it's a gluten problem and I reacted to the avenin. Somehow I feel less than tempted to try to find out because I'm so enjoying not having the symptoms I used to have
I'm quite confident that when I weigh in tomorrow I'll be back to or lower than 14.5.
Smoked Salmon: I'm not surprised to see sugar in Gravadlax, every recipe I've ever seen has used either sugar or honey. But I see no reason for sugar in smoked salmon. Can I just put a word in for Lidl's smoked trout, it's yummy and I thoroughly recommend it.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Edwardia - good choice, can't put a good lady down
daska - I put on 3 lb when I ate half a piece of chocolate cake a couple of weeks ago but it came off when I stuck to the plan. Had bad stomach cramps as well so maybe it is the effect of excess carbs on a stomach that has adapted to low carb. Does that make sense?
Mercy - see you lingering so are you having a good time?
mazzers - are things any better today and are you less tired? I have managed to work the diet so that it is showing around 3000mg of pottasium on fitday and still keep to around the 30 carb mark. I know that they recommend 4700mg but the UK states 3500mg so 3000 is good enough for me. I also find that fitday doesn't always show the right balance of vitamins and minerals when you look at each item and then work it out for yourself.
skymist - you constantly come out with information that I hadn't considered but we never stop learning and I am finding it all very interesting!
I have been looking at additives myself recently and you can check under the nuitritional information for products on mysupermarket for Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose, which could be helpful before you shop.
Bit apprehensive as blood results due tomorrow but otherwise doing fine.
Have a good rest of Thursdayx

Much better today thanks... it's my day off
I had plans for today but have been so tired i've cancelled my plans and slept loads instead.
Things are about to get worse tho, one back from holiday next week, another starts hers, one off with stress (after just a month working there i think he's taking the p***, does it on every dept apparently) so am dreading next week.
Found wet washing still in the machine since Mondaybeen so shattered i've been falling asleep and forgetting about it.
I'll prob just lurk next week but will be reading.0
