Hello LCers.
I have a lovely recipe for moussaka but it calls for canned tomatoes. What do you guys make bolognese / chili type dishes with to keep the carb content down?
I'd like to make a huge one and portion it up so I always have a quick supper once I've got the tots to bed. I'm struggling at the moment to cook from fresh every day, particularly the days I work and they go to nursery. We are up and out before 8am and not home till 5, and they are in bed by 7 so need my undivided attention for those two hours in between.
Something I can deal with quickly after 7pm would be perfect.

Carbs in 1 can = 18g,at least the one I have in my hand. If you make 4 portions that would be 4.5 per portion. Is that ok for you?
Edwardia - my daughter's family gets through 4 pints a day, 2 adults, one 11 year old and one 7 year old.0 -
Doh I just looked and mine are 16g.
I think I'd added some on my Atkins app and it was so much higher.
READ THE LABELS DOH!!!
Thank you!Bossymoo

daska - I am finding it difficult re carbs and fibre on fitday as it gives 1.3 carbs for a scrambled egg, which would be right and, when I look at today I would say that I had 8 carbs so far but fitday says 14.9 with 11.1 fibre so please tell me what measure should I use? Can't find avacado either so have had to add it as a custom food. Also I have been treating myself to 2 tsp Sainsbury's basics peanut butter each evening which equates to 0.55 carbs on the jar, 3.9g per 100g, but this seems low as it is quite sweet. However 2 tsp would have 2g fibre to add to that.
avocado is definitely on there - possibly check the spelling you're using?
Most of the foods on there have an option to add as raw or various other forms. Fitday seems to add in the nutritional content of what it thinks you might have included in a prepared dish. e.g. scrambled egg made with a bit of cream would be different to made with milk or brie. So some of the discrepancy might be due to that. Try adding the ingredients to your food list in their raw state, it might make more sense?
Edwardia. FWIW I buy the 1kg tubs of Meridian which lists the ingredients as: Peanuts Whole Skin On (100%). Per 100g
kcal 579
protein 29.6g
carbs 11.6g
sugars 5.9g
fat 46g
saturates 8.2g
mono 21.1g
poly 14.3g
fibre 8.5g
sodium 3mgEat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

That sounds pretty good sheila54 for a whole family as opposed to one man out of the house 12 hrs a day and a dawg.
bossymoo canned tomatoes and passata are one of those variable things.. I think I'll do those on the low carb bargains thread once I've finished houmousI have used canned tomatoes, passata, fresh tomatoes and Loyd Grossman sauces which can be surprisingly low carb (but not all pasta sauces are)

I am an idiot, was spelling it wrong!!!! It is a good website but I wish it would let me use say half an avocado instead of by weight, cup or slice.
Feeling very full after my curry:p I would like to feel full of energy, as I did when I first started last year, but maybe it is low thyroid or age
Thanks for your help.0 -
