But at the same time a lot of the meat is from grain fed animals and the nutrient levels are apparently much lower than from grass fed.

Are you sure about the grain fed animals? It is the norm in the US but still thankfully rare in the UK... although a growing 'problem'.
I wish I had easy access to the unpasteurised jersey milk I used to drink as a child - the stuff you get now tastes like water in comparison.

I like gold top milk from the supermarket. It isn't unpasteurised but still tastes delicious. Far better than the watery green or red top nonsense.

think i must have missed the discussion re meat, is the meat we buy in the supermarkets grass fed then?

i assumed it was grain fed ( reading too many american websites :o)
I know the chickens in our local butchers says grain fed ( can you even feed chickens grass ??)

daska do we need to subtract the fibre from the total carbs then if using fitday ?

nuttybabe nice to see you posting , glad DDs op is over, i remember having grommets fitted when i was little

Most beef in the UK is still forage fed rather than grain fed but how often do we see labeling that tells us which? You have to check the country of origin and guess. Can't remember ever seeing a label stating 'fresh beef - fed on steakmaker pellets' LOL. And, unless it's changed in the last couple of years, the country of origin doesn't have to be stated for ready meals or in restaurants.

Fitday is american so you subtract the 'fiber' from the total carbs. UK labels list fibre separately from carbs. Avocado was an easy one to check as the difference is so marked.

Coconut Oil - I cook with it (or butter depending on what I'm making) and I take it neat, a teaspoon at a time, spread out throughout the day, between 1 to 2 tablespoons. I'm not sure what helps more, the oil or the low carb LOL, but it certainly helps with satiety.

daska - I am finding it difficult re carbs and fibre on fitday as it gives 1.3 carbs for a scrambled egg, which would be right and, when I look at today I would say that I had 8 carbs so far but fitday says 14.9 with 11.1 fibre so please tell me what measure should I use? Can't find avacado either so have had to add it as a custom food. Also I have been treating myself to 2 tsp Sainsbury's basics peanut butter each evening which equates to 0.55 carbs on the jar, 3.9g per 100g, but this seems low as it is quite sweet. However 2 tsp would have 2g fibre to add to that.

breakfast - 1 scrambled egg, 2 rashers bacon & 1 large mushroom chopped and fried in olive oil

lunch - 11/2 oz soft cheese, cucumber and half avacado

dinner - take away coconut lamb curry with sag paneer

+ 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 dsp Linwoods mix as above, 1 coffee with cream and splenda, 2 tbsp sugar free jelly.

Tell me what you think please.

Have a good day everyone :)

SHEILA54 I haven't done all the peanut butters yet but most of them, certainly ASDA, Sainsbury's and Waitrose and so far essential Waitrose peanut butter is lowest at 6.59/100g. I think the carbs depends on the type of oil used and whether sugar is added or not.

I've not eaten anything yet, starting to get a bit peckish.. a side benefit to metformin is that it suppresses appetite.

I've put up Easter offers for ASDA, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Iceland. Got Waitrose, Co-op, Tesco to do and Farm Foods to finish phew. If anyone wants to join in please do !:D

My carbs were never overly high on fitday, about right i'd say, worth checking if the fibre has been deducted or not, no good assuming.

The jar definitely says 3.9g carb per 100g but I think that this has been discussed earlier in this thread. Started by Minihauk on page 500. Surely they can't put on the wrong details :D

mazzers - Hi. It doesn't seem to make it clear on the fitday website, unless I am blind. Think I'll keep to my own estimation and use it for the rest as it is very good for calories, fibre, protein, vitamins etc. and it gives me the overall balance. How is life?

    Hello LCers.

I have a lovely recipe for moussaka but it calls for canned tomatoes. What do you guys make bolognese / chili type dishes with to keep the carb content down?

I'd like to make a huge one and portion it up so I always have a quick supper once I've got the tots to bed. I'm struggling at the moment to cook from fresh every day, particularly the days I work and they go to nursery. We are up and out before 8am and not home till 5, and they are in bed by 7 so need my undivided attention for those two hours in between.

Something I can deal with quickly after 7pm would be perfect.

    evening all

had a lovely day with DD1 , spent the day at a retail outlet , unfortunately they only seemed to serve doughnuts ice cream and jacket potatoes, we eventually found a mcdonalds and i had a big mac and discarded the bread, so my fitday analysis my be skewed a bit as i dont have exact numbers to compute

B: 3 eggs scrambled with coconut oil and 3 slices haloumi
L: said big mac minus the bread diet coke
D: 3 pork sausages and 100g peas with butter strawberries and double cream

fitday analysis: cals 1,175 fat 62% protein 25% carbs 13%

sheila your day looks good to me , but im no expert x
