    Hi all!

    Sorry I defected can't say I'm back but I'm hanging around. :)

I initially stopped calling in as I felt (once again) I was paying too much attention to food. I find every now and then it's best to just carry on and not even think about it.

I've been pretty much lc as I always am. No weight loss, no problem :)

A coupla weeks ago I was told by Doc that she thought I'd had stroke. I haven't - Brain Scan (CT) said I had a normal brain. Bit disappointed as I'd always assumed mine was exceptional.:rotfl:

My blood pressure was through the roof but she did test it AFTER she told me I'd had a stroke :rotfl: Ambulance, the lot.

All my blood tests came back fine. I'm not anemic (well I wouldn't be :)) Nor have I elevated blood sugar (duh!) But my white cells seemed to be working overtime. They're now blaming a virus. Can't find anything else. Anyway, still feel woozy when stood up for a couple of hours.

    So, that's my excuse.

Like I say, cant say I'll be back altogether just yet but thought you deserved an explanation.

I've not eaten much, Mazzers maybe IF will have worked for me too :) I've had baked beans a lot in the last week. Not LC but comforting. I've only been eating 2ce a day as I've not been doing much. No big carb binges as I am so ingrained not to go down those aisles I don't have much carb stuff in the house. Did fancy Ice creams, bought some bournville lollys but had gone off the idea before I got home so they're still in the freezer. :rotfl:

I need to stand up for 8hrs a day at work. Hope I feel better soon :)

Hi folks. I'm still here: lurking ;)

So sorry about your health problems/scares Mercy and Mazzers <hugs>
That manager is a fool Maz: idiot probably could have got several more hours of work out of you if he'd let you have a break: not that that's how it should have been: you clearly shouldn't have been expected to do that alone! He should be in trouble for that!!

I posted on the weight loss thread and got shot down in flames. It doesn't seem to matter how many doctors and research studies I quote at people, they will happily quote stuff from Slimming World back.

The NHS etc won't deviate from the low fat mantra because if they do so, they leave themselves open to a class action by people with ruined health, who followed their advice.

The NHS and Department of Health shouldn't stick head in sand it really annoys me !

What annoys me more is people who don't go research low carbing themselves getting really vitriolic about it and spouting absolute rubbish.

Yes, this annoys me too. Not so much professionals, since I haven't sought any professional advice (and am a little disappointed that the Dr didn't do me a kind of 'blood MOT' when taking my blood.. simply looked for what she thought might be causing my calcium to be a little raised.. I will ask her next time if she would test my cholesterol and uhm.. stuff like that), but 'normal' people who think they know it all.

It seems that there's a wealth of information supporting whichever side of the fence you're on, or at least that's what some people like to suggest, and sadly I'm not knowledgeable enough to correct them. I've watched things like Big Fat Fiasco, and they seem pretty convincing to me.

This guy at work yesterday was blathering on about the D-k-n diet (find that google! :p), which I know is a kind of low-carb diet, since we've had people on this thread who do it and do well on it. But, what was annoying was that he was banging on about it like he was some kind of expert, when he's only been on it a week......... he thinks because he's lost nearly half a stone he's in a position to give advice. I very nearly said, 'Wait till you've lost a stone and been on it a month or two mate..' then we'll see how easy it is. He had to point out that my pork scratchings were SOOO unhealthy and they're 'really not good for you'. He knows because he used to be addicted to them apparently.. I had a bag from the butchers to try them, to see if they were nicer than the horrible little packets I've had over the last few months.. They were almost nice actually :D We were then talking about it more and I mentioned the Paleo/caveman diet and said that the 'no dairy' idea puts me off since I eat quite a lot of cheese.. then he says how that's not good either and how high in cholesterol it is... Really? didn't know that.. and sadly my lack of knowledge didn't help me.. all I said to him was that I'd lost a stone and felt better than I had in years... <shrug> Then he was suggesting that fat is bad.. I wrote down the Fat fiasco link and suggested he watch it. The guy's got loads to lose anyway, so I'm not gonna be taking nutrition advice from him! I just liked the idea of having someone to talk to about it :(

It just made me more determined to lose weight, then when someone asks me how I can say low carb and I will actually be visible proof that it does work! I obviously haven't lost enough to sell it yet! It p'd me off yesterday though, and after OH fell asleep on the sofa I continued drinking wine and had a little 'kitchen exploration' if you get my drift..

Back to it now though. I wish to repeat the week where I lost 5 lbs. I note that I missed having a proper evening meal 2 or 3 times that week, so I will aim to try that. Otherwise I will follow it loosely and see how it goes.. If that isn't successful, I will either try to follow it more exactly, or will try the week where I lost 4 lbs, which is very similar.

Starting the day with a pint of green tea, instead of my usual milk tea followed by creamy coffee with sweetener. Got a couple of little slices of flax/almond bread under the grill too.

    I'll show them bar stewards!

OH is off now, as work came to an end. It's just as well though, since he had health problems atm (something wrong with his kidneys, but I don't think he's too worried since he said, "If mine have packed up, you can give me one of yours....."..... He's also suffering badly with some kind of knee/ligament-type problem). He can't be off for long though, since we can't afford it!!!!!!

    This week will be... challenging.

    Have a good day :D

This post has grown somewhat from what I intended... partly why I don't post much lately. Lots to say and probably boring people. A bit like a woman I know: she talks so much but says so little, if you get my meaning..

I have to say i rarely would tell people i'm lc-ing, causes too much hassle and arguing, the best way, is to lose weight and when you are congratulated and asked how you did it then tell them.

I would just explain that i was 'cutting out bread' or 'cutting down on potatoes'.. never tell people you are cutting out fruit tho... the arguments i've had over that one!

This might be an interesting link for some of you. It is a video from a talk by an American doctor that cured herself of MS. She extols the virtue of a paleo type diet, and there are other interesting facts re. vits and mins. It's 17 mins long, but worth a watch.

I don't really mind what people think as it works and I feel better on it so it's their loss!!
I wonder if it may be down to the press on the original Atkins diet, which I wouldn't have followed as I thought it unhealthy, but now with all the veg and salad I can't see how anyone can have a problem.

Mercy - good to have you back, mazzers - sorry about your problems, life can be so hard sometimes :( Hope things are better soon.
Don't let people walk all over you, you and your health are worth more than that!! Please keep posting as it is good for us to support one another.

hannoja - good for you, keep up the good work.

Will watch the video later, thanks murphydog999

    Hi,

I've read the last few pages and find it v interesting. Well done all the losers.

At new year's I went on the dukan diet which I continued until the end of feb. I initially lost about 7lb in the first week or so and then stalled for about 2 or 3 weeks but then the scales showed about 2-3lbs per week which was great.

When I am on a diet, I cheat very rarely, and I made sure everything was fat free and carb free / lc. I went on holiday at end of feb, and knew it would be too hard to continue, so I started Atkins instead, and despite eating all the fat (lovely butter / oil / mayos etc) the weight is still coming off although more slowly.

I started off at 74kg and I'm now 63kg, so am very happy eating this way. (Especially on Atkins as I feel I'm not deprived at all).

Just to add to the recipes, I've got 2 lovely ones:

To the person who said they miss toast - I've got a perfect recipe which takes 5 minutes. (I reworked this recipe from a dukan recipe which used oat bran and yogurt and no butter).

    Lovely toast
2 / 3 tablespoons of low carb flour (stuff like ground linseed / flax meal / etc - I put the whole linseeds in a blender for about 3 bursts of 5 seconds each which does the job) (btwn 1-4g carb depending on which you use)
    1 egg
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tbsp splenda (optional)
about 1 level tablespoon of butter.
    1 or 2 tablespoons soya milk (0.1g carb / 100ml)

Melt butter, add all ingredients except soya milk together and mix well. Get a squarish microwavable dish (I have small baking dishes which are probably 9 inches by 5 inches). Mix the soya milk into the mixture to make it easy to spread over the pan.

When I spread it it is about 3 or 4 mm thick.

Put that in the microwave for 2 mins and it comes out like a low flat bread. Slice it into 4 pieces (i.e. from N to S, then E to W) and these pieces can be lifted with a spatula to put in a toaster straight away. Or let it cool and eat it like bread. .

They give a very filling "toast" to have butter & marmite / peanut butter / bovril etc with. You could also make french toast with it.

I love it, and have it for breakfast every morning which makes such a change from the meat and yogurt I was always having.

You could add cinnamon / vanilla etc if desired.

I also saw someone is sick of cauliflour rice - I've got a fab take on that too, using marmite!

    Marmite rice

    1. 1 onion
    2. as much cauliflour as you want
    3. 3a small handful of frozen peas & sweetcor - Or if you prefer, use peppers / courgette / more low carb things
    4. 1 desert spoon oil to fry onions
    5. 1 tablespoon butter
    6. 1 teaspoon marmite
    Fry onion until browned

Add minced / finely chopped cauliflour and fry so it all gets coated with oil

    Add veggies of choice
melt butter in micro and stir in the marmite until blended
    add to the fried mixture
fry for a few more minutes until you just know it's going to be delicious (and it is):rotfl:

Even my kids, who hate cauliflour AND marmite loved it and it has such a rich flavour..

Diabetes UK is a joke - handing out Krispy Kreme doughnuts to people in the street as an incentive to donate... !!!!!! ? And their corporate sponsors include Nabisco, for example. Who next .. Tate & Lyle ?

The NHS etc won't deviate from the low fat mantra because if they do so, they leave themselves open to a class action by people with ruined health, who followed their advice.

I made the decision to low carb but once I did, my GP was supportive. NHS rules prevent him advocating anything against NHS policy but once I explained my position he has been supportive and enthusiastic. I am now starting to find that if I state that I low carb, other health professionals will tell me that's a good idea on an off the record personal opinion basis.

The NHS and Department of Health shouldn't stick head in sand it really annoys me !

I havent read the whole thread ( only just found it tbh ) but have you visited this diabetes forum ?

    http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewforum.php?f=12

I found it when the OH was told his diabetes was progressing and he would end up on insulin and its the first time we had come across low carbing as the way forward , fuming that in the 6 years he has been diagnosed no one has advised him on diet or that diabetes can , if you following nhs guidelines get progressively worse

We are both now sticking to low carb , I dont tolerate wheat very well anyway , but we have cut out bread and potatoes almost completely ( occasional hic cup which i am aiming to eradicate ! ) and avoiding all processed foods
We both feel so much better and his BG readings have been amazing

Re: toast, because bread changes chemically when toasted, it's never going to be low carb because it brings out the natural sugars. I have a feeling that if you can't find low carb bread locally, that Nimble is the lowest carb sliced. Companies like Avidlife and lowcarbmegastore also sell low carb rolls and flatbreads.

I feel lucky that I just never craved bread, cakes, biscuits or puddings anyway. I am trying to find low carb versions of things and today I found 4.8g/100g peanut butter - Waitrose thick and crunchy peanut butter 340g jar for 1.99 currently on Mix & Match offer to 10/04 ie buy 2 at 1.99 get 3rd free.

My other discovery is Lactofree filtered lactose free semi-skimmed milk which is about 2.2 carbs per 100ml as opposed to around 11 carbs.

I try not to eat carby food, but as I'm not on a diet to lose weight and then returning to *normal* food, knowing that I can have two scoops of some brands of ice cream or one McVitie's digestive with my tea at my mother's just makes me feel a bit less weird.

One rule I have made is NOT to buy anything that's over 10g/100g per serving.

There was a good forum at lowcarbdiabetes.com but it seems to have gone AWOL :( now. The diabetes community seems very much split whether to low carb or not to low carb so I don't read any of them as fights always break out and it gets too heated !

    ermmm no

there is a chemical change that makes it brown and crunchy , but it doesn't alter the nutritional value
