I really dont feel I'm missing out on anything on Valentines; it's just become another commercial opportunity. Everything connected to it is overpriced & anyway I would prefer to have my romantic celebrations at a time that is personally relevant rather than a specified date . Can anyone here tell me why we have Valentines, & on that particular date ?

I know what you mean. I think a personal date is much more romantic - as well as getting a gift that was thought of with you in mind. Not just some ugly tat with a pink loveheart on it.

I thought I knew the story of St Valentine but just looked on Wikipedia and it turns out they don't even know. The name was popular in ancient Rome (it means worthy) and there are several St Valentines. There was one who would marry Christian couples in secret which was a big risk at the time and this is possibly where the connection came from.

The real romantic connections came in 14th Century and are attributed to Chaucer. It then had a resurgence in 1840 and has been popular since then.

In Victorian times it was all about the sending of hand-written 'Valentines' - which does sound really lovely if you have a boyfriend with legible handwriting and a good turn of phrase (re-watched SATC The Movie on weekend and am thinking of 'Love letters from Great Men')
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

And feed my interiors addiction ;)

Is that a book? I'm sure I have seen it somewhere and ignored it in case it started another fit of, "I want a boyfriend, why haven't I got a boyfriend..."

Because the card companies are starting to feel the pinch after Christmas.

Have you seen the film? It plays a small part in there.

The interesting story is that the book wasn't real when they made the film, it was just something the props department made.

However there was such a buzz about the film and the book that a publishing house quickly brought out a book to fit in!

It has loveletters from Napoleon, Beethoven, Schubert that kind of thing.

Of course their lovelives didn't always work out well despite the lovely romantic letters!!

Ps Shoegal - I love the series and the movie and in my head my life is just like theirs.....(and I especially love the clothes / shoes / accessories!)

How funny, I was just thinking at the weekend I wish I could buy the SATC film, but that would mean setting up my DVD player and it's too complicated, then I remembered I can watch DVDs on my laptop:jWill watch and report back:D Although someone on the Boots thread gave away the ending:mad:

Like on The Simpsons when the card companies invented Love Day to fill the gap between Easter and Christmas:rotfl:
