Wasn't really having a go, I just like to know roughly what the problem is before I entrust that problem to someone else. Stops them telling you you need a new gear box when it's just the wheel rubbing..;)
  • cant you just change them round yourself would be cheaper and quicker than driving to a garage to do it

Id rather get them fitted properly. It wont cost me a penny..the mechanic is sorting them out FOC.

Also like him to check for any damage.

did you know what you were doing when buying the wheels - i.e. do they have the correct offset for your wheel hub or have you done the max power thing and just bought larger wheels without understanding the PCD and ET settings?

Well the guy that i bought them off has the same car as I do and he said there were absolutely no problems. He also has a MK1 ford focus, so they should fit!

    The wheels are multifits 4x100 et40, 4x108 et40(mine)

Yeh they should not be rubbing, the explanation given sounds most likely I think.

i think try putting spacers in between the wheels and hub, this will make the wheels come out slightly, so if its rubbing against something it won't.

if you do this, you may have to get longer wheel nuts.

Hmm I was thinking this but the fitment is right for the focus so shouldnt need spacers!

and put extra strain on the wheel bearings, a common problem with the wrong offset wheels being fitted.

Right guys here is what happened this morning.

The mechanic jacked the car up and spun each wheel to see if there was anything catching and there was nothing at all. The wheels were spinning freely. He then took one of the wheels off to see if they were fitted correctly and they were as the bolts would only go in the holes that they were in originally.

Next he checked the wheel bearings and they were in tip top condition so that was not the fault.

He then lowered the car back down and checked if the tyres were rubbing on any of the arches. Again the arches were not the problem.

He then inspected the tyres and noticed that there was some slight wear on the outside of the tyres .

The tyre pressures were checked and they were OK.

We then went out in the car together for 20 mins so he could here the noise. The noise got louder as he increased his speed and didnt change when turning left or right.

After he took the car out he said the problem is most likely to be road noise from the tyres..especially because there is slight wear and they are budget tyres.

So now looking to get some new tyres tomorrow morning but i will keep you updated and thanks for your suggestions!
