  • I used Spirit of Salts overnight and this dislodged the thick layer of lime scale. You have to very careful with this product and do not inhale as you pour some in toilet. Results: a toilet which looks like new.
  • I thought the same as you Diana, and didn't try vinegar for yonks - and then lo and behold - 15p value brown vinegar from Mr. T - majic! job done! you've only 15p to lose....
  • I've cleaned a vile loo in a house we moved into with kettle descaler.
I decanted out as much water as possible from the pan using an old yoghurt pot and then used kettle descaler think I used two packs and two kettles of boiling water left for a couple of hours and it was perfect .

Once it's clear use the descaling cleaner regularly (or maybe vinegar I have yet to try this) to prevent a reoccurance.

Hi, just wanted to say I had (and now have again) the exact same problem. Tried everything and it didnt work. Only thing that shifted it, was emptying the bowl of water, sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on it, waiting a few minutes and then scrubbing.

What I did with mine was scoop all the water out (chuck it down the sink or bath, whichever is nearer) and then use a pumice stone to scrub it all off. Worked brilliantly and wasn;t that difficult to do. Bleach the pan first though, then flush it so you are working in non-bleachy water, and wear gloves just to be sure.

It also works on enamel baths

I agree, it's not the sort of stuff to be careless with but it really does make the loo like new. I used a plunger first so that there was less water than usual and I think that helped. After I flushed it way I thought it hadn't worked to start with, then I gave it a light scrub and the brown limescale just flaked away - brilliant!!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

A number of things to try... a combination (on different days!) might get you there.

Denture cleaning tablets down the loo every night - works eventually.

Heat white vinegar to boiling point, tip it down the loo while hot and leave it. Do this last thing.

1 part bicarb to 4 parts vinegar - sprinkle bicarb down the loo, then squirt with neat white vinegar. Let is sit for half an hour then scrub and flush.

Mix borax (now in MrT as part of their naturally cleaning range) with lemon juice to a paste (enough to cover what you're trying to deal with. Flush to wet the pan, then rub on paste. Leave 2 hours, then scrub thoroughly.

Pumice stone is also good (use a cheap one that falls apart easily).

Wear gloves, and if using hot vinegar, don't breath it in (get someone else to do this!).
  • Hi
ive just moved into my boyfriends and his toilet pan was thick with brown limescale and i went on a mission to remove it!

I tried a few things like tablets and stuff before hand. I finally shifted it with tescos own-brand 'limescale remover'. It came in a bottle that looks like bleach and it worked a treat. I left it on for a few hours and the limescale came off in big pieces, it was gross but satisfying!
  • I used Domestos Zero on limescale around bath/sink plugholes and around tap bases.

    It works a treat!!

I have had some success with cheap denture tablets. If they do that to the loo, not sure I'd want them on something that goes in ma gob!
