  • A WORD OF WARNING! PLEASE DON'T EVER MIX BLEACH AND A LIMESCALE REMOVER - IT CAUSES A CHEMICAL REACTION THAT CREATES CHLORINE GAS AND COULD KILL!

Agreed - I did this once, and I tell you the fumes were immense, I thought I was going to faint and had to run outside. My head was strange for quite a while. Luckily none of the kids were around at the time.

  • Can Kilrock be used to try and clear hard limescale on shower screen, vinegar will not shift it. Any other ideas would be appreciated, have tried most of the supermarket brands but they do not seem strong enough.

Have you tried Viakal? I think you can get it from Wilkos and it's not dear. It's worked for me on stubborn limescale, although it can take a couple of goes.

Our washing machine has just given up the ghost and after taking the pump to bits it is covered inside with limescale:eek:. It's too late for this machine (RIP) but is there anything i can put in with the powder in my next one to stop this happening again?Looking for something cheaper than Calgon hopefully!

    Thank you!

pumps are cheap to buy, the only way to ensure no limescale is to buy a water softner, but cleaning your filter more often would have prevented pump failure
  • If you add soda crystals to each wash you do, it will soften the water, and you will also find you need less washing powder. I would also reccomend running a hot wash with just vinegar or citric acid to clean out the limescale from all the internal parts of the machine once a month or so. Vinegar also works as a fabric softener, so if you used it in every wash , you would also be cleaning out the limescale each wash. Hope this helps!

I add soda crystals too, much much cheaper than calgon which I think is a bit of a con.

You can also use cheap dishwasher tablets in every washer rather than buying calgon, was told this by an engineer when my old washer gave up the ghost, sadly i dont do this but every 2 months do a wash using Dr Beckmans washing machine rescue.
