If so, the third-party (if over 18 at the time) would be liable for this bill...

Given OP's previous post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1001541 was a query about where to put £10k and given low interest rates at present, then lending son's girfriend the cash to pay off Orange at, say 5% interest looks like a win-win to me!0

Networks do have a credit limit mechanism, but as people have said, roaming calls don't get updated to the account as quickly as home ones. A friend had his phone blocked at £200, and borrowed mine to call his network to sort it out.
So there might be some scope for asking for some sympathy from Orange to help with the amount, such as paying over a few months.
There are some ways to avoid this in future.
As suggested above, one option is get a local SIM in the visited country. But be careful about direct dialling international calls out on it - some have cheap int'l calls and some do not. It might be worth looking at a callthrough arrangement like a calling card. Using cheap calls providers here, as listed in the MSE Callchecker, to make calls to the foreign SIM is certainly worthwhile.
There are some global roaming SIMs with cheap or free incoming calls in many countries. Some of these have Isle of Man or Jersey mobile numbers which come out of inclusive minutes on some but not all UK networks. If the contract here doesn't include them, get a one-month contract with one that does. Then it should be possible to arrange that almost all the calls between two people like this are made by the person here.
Also, maybe use more texts instead of calls, not by sending them directly, but there are some mobile Java programs which send an equivalent via data, such as smsbug, Vyke and Fishtext, costing only a penny or two plus about half a penny to the network for the data. Find some discussion of these on here by using the forum search0 -
Excuse me, but...
The real questions here should be was she 18 when she signed the contract with Orange and was she 18 when she made the calls...?[
If not, the "contract" is unenforceable by Orange.
wrong
and to the OP, maybe if she spent less time chatting and more time working she could pay it off quicker?what is the plural of moose?

I thought though, that it would be their responsibility still as she agreed to the fact she was over 18 when taking the contract out? - Checks should have been made but if done over the internet, it's different than the store with ID checks?0 -

brummybloke,
Please, then, advise us all how you would go about enforcing legally a contract signed by a minor in the United Kingdom.
I'm sure my old friend Quentin will be as fascinated as I am to hear it.
