The discount is a percentage, but I can't recall what it is.

You can purchase in an Apple Store or over the phone; you don't have to go through the university/college.

Thanks. I have accessed via a college and the discounts are the same as for schools, certainly not `hundreds` of pounds as has been described.

Does anyone know whether they are any better from a university?

The discounts from Unis are pretty decent, you can definitely save hundreds on hardware, but unless you are a Uni student, you aren't going to be able to access it - start from here: http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/education_routing?mco=MTIxODk0Nw

"You can only access the Apple Store for Higher Education when connected to your university's network.
You can still order when you are off-campus by calling 0800 039 1010 to speak to one of our Mac Experts."

Thanks, you would think the discounts would be the same from all establishments.
Has anyone any idea what sort of discounts ara available to uni students?

I did, didn`t think they would tell me without some proof, but no probs.
The schools and colleges are the same discount. Uni slightly more, still not `hundreds` of pounds though, but better than nothing.

    20in Imac School/College £892.40 Uni £834 (retail £949)
    24in Imac 2.66Ghz School/College £1,127.00 Uni £1.055.00 (retail £1.199.00)

Roughly £115-145 saving from retail price.

The Uni discount is 14% as I used my sons to buy myself a Mac Book over the weekend. You can also get the 3 year waranty and phone support for £43 (give or take a few £'s) and they have a £60 rebate if you buy a printer at the same time so my son got a HP Photosmart printer and I just paid £9.95 for it.

well I did one of those personal shopping sessions today and then had a bit of a play with an Imac.

Gotta say I was surprisingly and disappointingly underwhelmed :(

Can't put my finger on much of why except a couple of things:

    1) Mouse response was rather erratic and needed a lot of movement on desk for not that much movement on screen ***BUT*** I guess one can change such settings and maybe the surface it was on was not ideal for an optical mouse. Also lack of ability to have a page back when on internet with a thumb button - would feel I'd lost an arm without that - guess I'd have to use a mouse with a back button ...***but*** would the back button work on a mac ?? any one know ?

    2) Speed of the thing :( I have oft heard said that the macs are very quick and the current imac with 4gb is reckoned to work at "blistering speed" ...ehmmm no, no , no ,no . Utter b*ll**ks. Indeed very much the reverse was true - snail through treacle springs to mind - can't believe how slow it was - launching progs - ms office took an age. As for page rendering in safari soooo slow why do people claim they are fast - they most certainly are not. Do those of you who have macs use safari or do you use firefox ?

Was very dissapointed as had got to the stage where I was pretty much 80-85% decided on a mac and this has knocked me back somewhat :(.

i will do at least another 1/2 such visits as I still would quite like to get one but today's experience left me rather deflated and underwhelmed :(
Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
    Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying

Interesting, not had a play with one yet.
I read somewhere that you can attach any mouse and keyboard to a Mac, someone will hopefully confirm.

yes you definitely can - just don't know if back button functionality will work.

service is very impressive in the stores and they do not do the hard sell - they are defo an impressive organisation.

If you go for it also consider the apple care - I will defo do that if I buy one - also they do a scheme, forgotten what it's called, where for approx £ 77 you can go one a week for a year and get training on all sorts of stuff - very impressive.

I've never noticed the mouse movement on any Mac being "erratic". As you say, it's very easy to adjust the speed of the mouse.

As for a back button, I've never used one, so I don't know exactly. However, the Mighty Mouse has 4 buttons, and you can use AppleScript to assign pretty much any function to any of the buttons.

My three years old iMac starts up and opens programs faster than a friend's brand new PC laptop. My iMac only has 1.5 GB of RAM in it at the minute, and I'm typing this, watching TV (and recording it), downloading something, talking to three people on messenger, and I just opened OpenOffice in a couple of seconds.

I have no idea what your frame of reference is, but I find it difficult to imagine how a faster, more powerful, better spec'd iMac than mine could be described as a "snail through treacle".
As for page rendering in safari soooo slow why do people claim they are fast - they most certainly are not. Do those of you who have macs use safari or do you use firefox ?

Safari is regarded by many as being one of the fastest browsers in the world because it does things measurably faster than other browsers. In one common Javascript speed test, Safari completed it in 174ms (making it the fastest browser tested), while Firefox completed it in 499ms. I used to use Firefox, but once Safari 4 was released, I switched back to Safari and haven't looked back. It's a lot faster.
Was very dissapointed as had got to the stage where I was pretty much 80-85% decided on a mac and this has knocked me back somewhat :(.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. Aside from saying that your experience doesn't mirror mine or the many people I know who use Macs. I think another visit and a play on a different Mac might be a good idea.

But, I know people who complained the Mona Lisa was disappointingly small, so there's no accounting for taste I guess.
