  • I have a friend who is not a techie or a nerd. He loves his mac because it does what he wants it to without any problems. He swears that he will never go back to windows.

I was thinking more about having a `play` on one rather than using them for anything else.

You'd be better off in John Lewis... all have a good selection of Macs.

    Thanks for the replies.
The 3yr warranty seems to be available from ebay for a lot less than the £136 apple want. Not sure how it works though and whether there would be any problem down the line.

Most of the other software seems to be available cheaper there too. Wireless keyboard is £20 if purchased with machine, the mouse is £12 but has some bad reviews.

So apert from maybe the wireless keyboard, there does`nt seem any need to purchase anything else with the machine.

Not sure whether the shop price is the same as online, or whether then can offer anything more. I think I have seen a large Currys with a specialist Mac department, but can`t remember where.
When I bought my Mac Book at the Apple store the Applecare was discounted down to £47.

Just to add I have installed BootCamp (comes with Leopard) so can boot into XP if need be to test things out. If you have formatted as a Fat32 partition then you can access what you save on the hard drive from your Mac OS.

Can't you do the same with an NTFS volume?

Mac OS X can natively read from an NTFS partition, but not write to it. There are some third party applications which allow it to write to NTFS volumes.

You can of course format a partition as NTFS and install and run Windows from it; you just won't be able to write to it when you're booted into Mac OS X.

"Boot Camp" is just a tool for non-destructively partitioning a hard drive, burning a driver disk, and starting Windows setup. That's all it does. Boot Camp doesn't run Windows; in fact, you don't even need to have Boot Camp installed to run Windows.

Macs can run Windows natively because they now have Intel processors, and they can boot Windows because Apple released a firmware update for the Mac's super-advanced EFI firmware, allowing it to emulate the crummy and antiquated BIOS in use in most other computers.

I use VMWare Fusion. Doesn't require a separate boot. I run Windows XP on Fusion only because I need just one programme which will not run on the Mac OS. I use it only for that programme because I prefer the Mac OS for everything else.

Does it run in CrossOver Mac?

That would save you having to run Windows at all.

    Oh, well that's too bad.

Is there not an equivalent Mac application you could use?
